brakes on boys 14" BSO are terrible, won't be long till it is a real safety concern if he needs to stop in a hurry.
I'm looking at picking up some cheap and cheerful kids tektro levers from CRC for a princely £7

Now would a road caliper work? I have a couple of old ones buried somewhere in the shed.
If not what would I need? Ideally cheaper (but work) the better.
Fitting is a single centre bolt, like I have on my roadie
Isn't the pull on a road caliper a lot less than v-brakes?
In that case you might have some setup issues with getting lever throw correct.
check to see that the road calipers in your shed are deep enough for the pads to reach the rim and wide enough to go round the tyre
They are more likely to be BMX style calipers which have a miles longer drop than a road caliper.
Something like this might be an upgrade:

Thanks for the link, you are probably right they are long flexy thin metal pos. prob means a road caliper wouldn't work
