Excuse what may well be a silly question, but im seeing it as an opportunity to learn. My mini me came off his bike yesterday on ice, and has managed in the process to kink and tear the gear cable, making the shifting very stiff for a 6year old. Replacement of the cable isn't going to be an issue, its the setting up at the rear mech end im not clued up on. Its a 20inch Spesh hotrock with 7speed gripshift. Any pointers and advice welcome.

PS... mini me is ok, scuffed knee and dented pride, but raring to get back to it

Assuming he hasn't bashed the mech then it's just a question of getting the tension right.

But if he damaged the cable it's worth checking out the cable stops too (alignment tool would be a good idea)

All the info is on the park tool website.

Oh and make sure you thread the cable the right way round the pinch bolt.

In that case should be pretty straight forward. Just need to get the cable tension right.

Wonderful! Will grab a cable in the morning and have a play. Thanks for the direction!

Put it in the smallest gear 1st. Wind all the tension off and then wind one turn back on. Thread cable and pull just so the tension is just on. Do up. Should be about 95% there. Adjust accordingly.
