[Closed] Replacement cage for FR Zee?

[#5862577]

Ok, so I had the longer cage Zee, and had a hanger destroying moment that seems to have wrecked the cage also on closer inspection.

The mech is under 10 rides old and I'm wondering if it's worth/possible replacing the cage?

FWIW I'm 99% certain it was all my fault and I got the chain too short... (Forgot to allow growth on FS bike... Doh.)

Is the cage different between the FR and DH? They're both listed as SS, I thought the change is up in the body (similiar to the mode adjust switch on the Saint)

You can buy an inner Saint cage which would most probably fit. But I can't find an outer plate to buy, which makes that pretty pointless.

The cage is the same on both FR and DH models. It is the hanger bit that changes. The cages are available but I am on my phone at the moment. Can find part numbers when I am back at Madison HQ tomorrow.

Cheers, Northwind - good to know even so.

So, can I get a replacement cage for it, or is my mech scrap? A Zee mech wouldn't be the end of the world, but still a shame to toss it if it's repairable.

Random thought that kindof misses the point of Zee- would a GS cage fit, and be anymore available than an SS cage?

Yes an SLX medium cage would fit.

Yep, so I see! 🙂

I'd rather have it short tbh, I'm experimenting with an X9 Type 2 setup on my FS but may end up back Shimano - the GS SLX cage might have been good here as I was pushing the FR Zee expecting it to cope with 2x10 and an 11-36 and as it turns out, a short chain...

I was trying to reuse it on my 1x10 HT when it became apparent I'd destroyed the cage and not just the hanger. Currently got an old SGS XT out of my box on there as a result and it's just a little longer than I needed! 🙂

If you (MrP) can tell me what I need and how to get it I'll be very happy! Email in profile if you'd rather drop off thread. Ta!

I had the same problem with my xt shadow clutch Mech.

Mister p gave me a link to a diagram. I bought the parts and replaced it on saturday.

I know its not zee but it might help.

I've got a carbon XTR medium cage that would fit on to a Zee mech that I don't need anymore.

Keen to sell it.

cheers, damascus! Very useful diagram.

I'll be interested in the SS cage replacement anyway but extra spares are handy to have...

Vincienup, you could pop by the shop (18 Bikes - I'm the taller of the two Matts) and I could even fit the cage for you.

I'll email you though.

Morning. The part numbers you need are 5V5 0840 (£5.99) and 5Y5 9803 (£14.99).

Both are in stock at Madison and both are postage free spares. So you should be able to order them through a local bike shop.

No worries. They are easy to fit, I have done a few in fields at various races. There is a little removable "pip" on the cage nearest the mech. Remove that, fit the cage then spin the cage 360 degrees to get spring tension. Then pop the "pip" back in to stop the cage spinning back round.
