battery life sucks now!!

can anyone who's replaced the battery themselves recommend a source for a decent replacement (edge 820)?

FWIW I replaced the battery in my 705 with one from ebay after about 7 years. It's been fine since. Garmin might have a battery replacement program.

Thanks, yeah I'm sure Garmin would do it (for a hefty fee!), more than happy to replace it myself with an Ebay one, it's a bit of a lottery whether you get a decent battery or not though so was hoping for a recommendation!

Has it only recently got bad? Since the last firmware update (January I think)? If so, it's possibly a software issue, not the battery itself...

(Garmin would swap your unit for a refurb for about £90 I believe.)

Watching with interest as I need one for my 820 too I think. I wasn't riding for about 18 months for various reasons and since starting again I noticed my Garmin reads like it's got half the battery life it used to...I presume if left not used the battery can discharge itself or something like that?

Just google it. Did my 705 a year ago - simple job, but google replacement on a 820 just in case. You usually get the battery and a correct sized torx

Google video looks a little more fiddly than the 705, but easy enough.

Did my 820 and it was a total pig of a job. Once you pop the screen off the glue doesn’t want to stick it back down again so I had to use some flexible glue to get it rattle free and waterproof. It did also take about 5 goes to get the pins lined up and everything working again but after all the faff its back to its mediocre best. I bought a 1030 because I couldn’t be arsed with its issues!

interesting, this is a possibility - I only noticed the poor battery life for the first time at the weekend, but that was probably the first ride I'd done this year using navigation (which always impacts battery life). I will do some research...

thanks, not worried about the technical aspect of the job, I've done loads of iPhone repairs in the past - I can't imagine this is trickier. Just after a recommendation for a good battery supplier, as eBay etc has both good and shite ones & you generally can't tell from the listing which is which!! Where did you get your battery from? Has it been OK?

@zilog6128 how did you get on with replacing the battery?

My Garmin 820 is brilliant but the battery life is shocking. Even worse at the moment in the cold!

Fed up of using it on battery saving mode.

Me too. I rode for less than 3 hours today and had about 10% remaining by the end. It was pretty damn cold but that's really not good enough. Edge 830 seems to be in short supply at the moment so no bargains to be had. I'm almost tempted to contact Garmin and pay to swap for a refurb 820. There are companies that will replace the battery for about £30, but they might mess it up.

I use an old Garmin Edge 200 which runs out of battery life pretty quick in cold weather. Is it worth getting the battery changed? As a person of limited patience I would prefer getting someone to do it and suspect this may not make it worthwhile.

My wife replaced the battery in her Edge 800, not too hard a job but you do need some very small Torx drivers. She got the new battery off Amazon, can't remember the brand now. Basically made it a new unit.

These people will do it:

https://www.tomtomrepairteam.co.uk/sat-nav-repairs/garmin-repairs/garmin-edge-explore-820-battery-replacement-service.html

That link's for the 820. They don't list the 200, but they do list the 500 which was essentially the same hardware so I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same battery and process.

Having watched a few youtube clips of battery replacement and charging port repair, another issue with Edge units, the later models are much harder to get into as they're glued together rather than using torx screws. They require heating up with a hot air gun and the screen carefully prising off to get anywhere near the battery compartment. This combined with unavoidable updates that randomly bork the software means that they've cleverly turned their product into a disposable item for even the most minor issue, good work Garmin

Does anyone have a link for the Garmin repair service? The ones I found don't exist anymore.
