Hi thinking of removing the spring from one side of my forks and just running preload on that side and a coil in the other. Trying to soften them and they do not do a softer spring kit.

Is the idea flawed?

I've done it with a pair of Drop Off Triples - ran air preload on the one side and a coil spring on the other - super soft. I can't imagine it would cause any long term damage although I only used mine for a couple of weeks as a stopgap. I've also done similar with the basic elastomer-sprung Drop Offs (no preload adjustment on those) - again spot on for the lighter rider.

It's the solution that MZ themselves gave me when i had the same issue as you.

cheers all that's great.

Just tried it and is certainly softer ( without any air).

However I am still not geting full travel when i bounce up and down. Wonder if this is the ssfv damping working or not? About 15mm short.
