my mates five has a bit of side to side play at the rear - he thought it was the wheel had a bit of wobble on it ๐Ÿ˜†

it hasnt, there is defintely a knocking/side to side play around the pivot area...

so firstly does that sound like its like the be the bearings? and secondly has anyone got a step by step guide for removing and installing the new ones?

please help ๐Ÿ™‚

Just from looking at my mates Five frame I would imagine that you simply release the two pinch bolts on the swingarm main pivot and extract said bearing races from the bushing/axle. If I were you I would email Orange technical department and get them to send you specific details ie torque settings for the pinch bolts etc etc. Most decent companies will help you out (of course that assuming the STW fettlers cant help you.

Put something between the swingarm and the seat tube like a cloth to protect the paint, remove lower shock pivot and move shock out the way, remove both dust caps that cover the bearings, undo a couple of turns the pinch bolt securing the swingarm to the bearing on one side only, when loosened use a nylon mallet and hit the swingarm on the heavily welded area inwards towards the down tube, this pushes the opposite bearing off the stub axle, retighten pinch bolt and then do the same on the opposite side, repeat until the bearings come off the stub axles, refitting is pretty much the opposite, make sure the swingarm is central before fully tightening pinch bolts and refitting lower shock mounting otherwise you will put sideways force in to the shock. Pretty easy job really, good luck. Pinch bolt torque is 15Nm as I remember and dust caps 4Nm.

votchy - just the trick cheers for the detailed reply, really what im after ๐Ÿ™‚

just to make sure - if the rear end has play..ie it moves side to side, is that a sign the bearings are gone? frame is 18-20 months old and not been touched? it literally knocks a few cms one side when holding the seatpost and wobbling the rear swingarm? does that sound like shot bearings or something more worrying?

carbon337 - phew so i take it you have side to side play on the rear end? with the caps off you can see the movement in the actual bearings, there becomes clear gaps when rocking it side to side....i hope this cures it...

Yeah you can see a gap opening up between bearing and axle. Now need my dealer to get me some tomorrow ๐Ÿ™

ohhh and one more thing, just to make sure where exactly am i hitting this mallet on the swingarm?? i know it says inwards towards the weld, but can any one be a bit more specific pleaaaase, i know that makes sense to most, but im not great with the world of mechanics ๐Ÿ™‚ willing to learn though!

phewwww i was worried i was gonna have to tell him his rear swingarm is buggered!

yes that sounds EXACTLY like what i was seeing on his - a clear gap happens around the bearing area when pushed side to side.....

you attempting it yourself carbon? done it before? is it really as easy as loosening a the bolts at the bottom? and giving it a good whack? ๐Ÿ˜†

i love oranges' simplistic mechanical ways...

This will be my first attempt but as its relatively agricultural i cant see it being hard.

Loosen both tap the arm one way > then tighten the opposite side and hit arm towards thast side > then loosen and do vice versa - bit of copper slip on the axle/stud and press new ones on.

cheers carbon - so when hitting the swingarm, will the bearing just slide off (hopefully) on one side, then the opposite for the other one?

so will the axle come out too? or should just the bearings come off and thats all?

sorry for the over questioning ermmm questionss...

the axle is basically a welded stud into the downtube

forgot to update - got them out after a fashion - 1st one came out fairly easy - opposite side was a little tighter on but after a few attempts knocking etc it finally budged

by chris the bearings were totally shot, and the outer ring had cracked also.....rusty, rough as hell and generally not that impressive after 18 months use....

anyways, im unsure what i tightened the pinch bolts up at for him as i only had a 10nm max wrench, so had to go by hand for the remainder? should be ok? look pretty sturdy bolts? just a bit worried they may sheard off, can you get replacement pinch bolts just to be safe?

I just do mine up hand tight so prob no more than 10nm I would guess - those stainless clamp bolts are very sturdy IME ๐Ÿ™‚ I have had them crumble before but mine did about 2.5 years but I depends on the frequency of use and jet washing etc!
