[#10356474]

OK, so I want to remove a 30mm axle screw-together WheelsMfg BB and replace with a 24mm axle version. I still have the "Mega Exo" spanner I used to screw in the second cup so can just unscrew that, however the bearing press I used to put the first cup in won't help to remove it again. So, what is the best way to remove the first cup that I initially pressed in?

Unlike a more disposable plastic cup I don't want to damage the outgoing BB so would prefer a more refined solution than "hit it hard" but appreciate that the cup removal tools (like the headset removal tools) may be my only option. Whether the prongs on such a tool would engage with anywhere solid on the end of the cup is what I would be concerned about.

Anyone got any experience of this sort of thing? I know I can probably get some sort of step-down adapter for 24mm axles but would prefer to have the right one in there first off. Thanks in advance etc etc

I just installed one, so I may face the same issue.  Maybe unscrew one end just a bit, tap it through a bit, unscrew a bit more and so on?

Hey now that is a clever idea, this is why I asked, that might just work mightn't it. I installed it myself so I know it's not got any Loctite on there. I guess avoiding damaging the side I'm unscrewing will be the key. Will see if anyone else has any other good ideas.

I'm very happy with the BB by the way, I have them on two bikes.

I've installed one, but yet to remove it. Given that the end of the threaded section was quite thin, if I was to try drifting it out, I would want to use something like a large piece of plastic pipe that fits over the threaded centre-piece.

Mine went in by hand on one side so no trouble removing it!

Yep i remember a thread on here to that effect but mine definitely wouldn’t have gone in by hand...

Does it not have (thin) splines on both sides?

Last one I did just unscrewed apart. No tapping anything out. Each side just screwed against the other, so it unscrewed by holding one side and unscrewing the other. Maybe mine's a different design?

As above, it seems some peoples' BB shells permit sliding in by hand (a mate of mine's was like that) whereas others require a press of some sort to push in the first side (like mine did). As a result, my expectation is that that pressed side will not simply slide out, hence the thread 😉

I was wondering about this too. Not fitted mine yet but will have to do the removal at some point in the future.

As they say how to but wondered if greyspoke way would work, or maybe the threads are a bit delicate?

Those instructions are for replacing the bearings though, with the cups staying where they are (as the design intends) unless I'm missing something?

Tbh I didn't really look at the detail as I couldn't find my bins 🙂

Had this back from Wheels...

If you unthread one side most of the way, until it pops out one side, you should be able to tap on it to get it to pop out the other side.  There are a few PF30-BB removers on the market if you want to go that route. We make one as well BE-30 but it is part of a larger tool set.
