So, today I went to see the specialist and to get my staples removed after having my left collarbone plated on the 3rd of this month after breaking it on the 26th of July.

I mentioned to the specialist that I have an exercise bike (a rubbish one) at home and if he gives me the ok, I want to give it a go just pedaling, not holding the bars. He said so long as there's no balance issues etc then I'm fine to.

Now I'm thinking of buying a turbo trainer instead. Never used one before though and I only have a mountain bike.

What's my options?

Depends on the break, mine was pretty bad so I was laid up most of three months, but I did start on the turbo after about 8 weeks. I just sat on it watching DVDs and such gently spinning. I was signed off work 3 months so anything was good to break up the boredom. I found I could play COD on the ps3 whilst turboing, given I was rubbish I played no worse...

Hope you heal quick!

I'm more annoyed about the fact that I've already done my time waiting for it to heal from the 26th of July to to middle of November and then they decided it needed an operation even though I could tell straight away, My GP said straight away as well as many others, it would need operating on.

That's an X-Ray from the day I broke it, A month later the bones had moved further apart.

Now I have to go through all the boredom again. And the fact that I initially got back into biking to lose weight and I put a fair chunk back on. That's why I want to get exercising as soon as possible so long as it doesn't effect my shoulder.

I was riding 4 weeks after having mine plated and did the singletrackworld weekender a week later, once I'd got everything moving properly I just started with press ups against a wall and gradually worked my way to proper press ups, gauging how much weight my shoulder could take as I went along, when I could do a full press up I then jumped on the bike and did sort of press ups on that too

Just getting fit again after breaking my collarbone last summer. Luckily mine wasn't displaced and no surgery required. However I did make a proper mess of muscles and ligaments in my shoulder.

I started on the turbo after about eight weeks off the bike. Two or three sessions a week helped me keep ticking over until I could get out biking properly.

I used my mountain bike with a slick rear tyre on. The more upright position meant a could keep most of the weight off my bust shoulder.

Tended to mix and match sessions. Did a bit of steady spinning whilst watching DVDs. Also did more intensive long and short intervals - found that I was concentrating on the pulse meter and the clock so time actually passed quite quickly. Didn't really spend longer than an hour per session including warm up and warm down.

Finally got back on the bike about 14 weeks post injury and I'm convinced that the turbo sessions plus plenty of walking helped me a huge amount.

Hope that helps a bit.

Simon
