[#5732072]

My bike got stolen recently while I was on campus in my university, so I’m looking for a portable bike that I don’t have to leave locked outside. I’m not really sure what to get but I have a friend with a [url= http://foldingbikereviews.org/tokyo-citizen-folding-bike-review/ ]TOKYO Citizen Bike[/url], and it seems like it’s a pretty good bike. But I wanted a second opinion. So do any of you have any experience with folding bikes? 🙂

Well, the Brompton is the obvious choice but is expensive and is a target for theft in it's own right. It's a great bike though.

Dahon make some ok folders but not as compact as the brompton.

The problem with a folder is that it needs to be taken with you at your destination so the foldability will work for home but it could be a pain the rest of the time.

I wouldn't go on that review alone, the reviewer appears pretty clueless. Beware anything cheap, just like any bikes, £3-400 is a minimum.

I think it may be possible to lock them up?

Obviously, but I'm assuming the OP doesn't want the bike stolen at his destination just as much as when it's left at home.

I'm not sure I'd be happy leaving my Brompton locked and chained in public as it's probably going to be more of a thief magnet than a normal bike.

FOLDING bike = Brompton
folding BIKE = Airnimal

Neither are cheap. In fact the entry point for good folding bikes is higher than normal bikes. Used Bromptons and to a lesser extent Airnimals retain much more of their purchase price. For value, a used Mezzo is a good buy and about £300-£350. A Giant Halfway is also a good choice. The bike you suggest is a cheap Chinese steel copy of a Dahon Mu. It will be heavy, have poor components and the hinges will flex, particularly the bars. I would avoid.

I rode for years on a Dahon, a Brompton was and still is out of my price range, and i wouldn't hesitate reccomending them.

?

It's just the way that the link is done with the product name and then using the BB Code for the url.

Brompton here, but I had to install a couple of Azonic levers to give the brakes SOME bite in the wet...

The supplied "puncture proof" tyres aren't up to much, either.

So, OP, how's your spamming turning out? Everyone's recommending something other than the pile of shit you're astroturfing.

Obviously, apologies if you're not spamming, but I think you are.

Thank you all for your recommendations. its clear i'm going to have to look a little more into this. One of the more attractive things about the TOKYO is that it really is cheap. but yea i don't want to buy it and then it breaks on me right away.

And as far as spamming...What would i be spamming?

[i]What would i be spamming? [/i]

well you linked to a review of a product you're looking to 'buy'.

That review was only posted this morning so it's odd you just 'stumbled' across it from a Google search?

You joined at about the same time the review was added to the website you linked to.

So, either the site relates to you or the bike.

Sorry to be suspicious but it's not unusual to have peopel come on here and post links to their products or site by way of a question.

The way you keep shouting TOKYO makes it look like you've been paid to promote the product too...

I've had a Dahon Mu Uno for four years. Great bike, very happy with it. A bit flexy out of the saddle, but that's the case with most folders, the rear coaster break is great fun for power slides too!.

Tried a Brommie, but found it a bit "noodly" and the small wheels didn't like dodgy road surfaces very much. All the other folders I've tried have been cheap steel copies of the big makes are just too heavy and the poor quality hinges and components inspired zero confidence in them.

The consensus on [url= http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-750010.html ]this thread [/url]seems to be that it's so heavy that everyone who bought it sold it and then got something better. Have you had a look at Craigslist for a second hand Dahon?

The bike linked in the first post looks dreadful, and the site that reviews it looks dodgy - only a contact form, no background on why it's an authority on reviewing bikes of any kind, no profile of the reviewers (sites as amateurish as that *love* to have author profiles), no visible revenue stream (ie, no ads) the review linked to is six hours old by the twitter timestamp, and the review site's twitter feed has three followers, one of which is a barely-comprehensible Far Eastern manufacturer's spam feed.

I've ridden a Brompton to and from work for two years now - 85 miles a week. Not many cheap folders would cope with a quarter of that mileage. How do I know? A workmate has gone through six of the cheaper Dahons in the same time.

[Edit]Not rubbishing Dahons, by the way - the higher-end ones are pretty damn good[/edit]

My advice, Mr Astroturf? Don't buy the bike you're advertising. You can get a far cheaper version with different stickers on. Or something that costs a bit more, but isn't a BSO-shaped piece of junk.
