I use spds on the mountain bike, any reason to stray from Shimano for the road bike? Budget around £50 but willing to stretch it closer to a ton if needed.

you will get good deals on shimano and look keo.used look for years , shimano reliable but bit heavier than rest
look keo work for me, if you can get the cleats with rubber bits on or you will slip slide all over the place when in cafe's............and trust me i know as we go in plenty of them
each to his own but personally I prefer spuds. Either the new XTR spuds or the single sided ultegras A600.
Roadie pedals are inconvenient and I don't like the float either. Talk of 'power transfer' is also funny.
+1 for Look KEO, Ribble is normally cheapest for these, £32 for easy, £46 for Classic (this has the Bi-material anti-slip cleat)
