I'm going to try this road bike malarky. For mtb I have shimano and time cleats. Any compatible road pedals? Or would I have to buy new cleats & pedals.

You can either get another set of whichever off-road pedal you like, or else buy Time RXS as they're the best.

If you go down the road of road pedals then you may need road shoes as the cleats are fastened on by three widely space bolts so won't go on a mtb shoe.
For money saving you can just use mtb shoes and pedals rather than buy them specifically for road biking. It'll make relatively little difference.
