Just to contradict all the 5.10 posts - I'm fed up with them. They're great, but they're sh*te. Barely last me 2 months.

Currently quite happy with some Giro Jackets, not quite as grippy, but getting close to lasting 2 seasons.

Why don't they last?

There were loads of 510's on the canyon sale site last week, I got a pair of Freeriders, which I price matched with go-outdoors to get an extra 10% off.

yeah, I'm looking whistfully at the FiveTen Maltese Falcons beside me that are going back to CRC because they're too narrow .... 🙁

My fiveten freerider elements are awesome when its grim, but I also do like the Adidas Terrex Trailcross ( http://www.adidas.co.uk/terrex-trail-cross-sl-shoes/S80797.html) for dry rides. Same sole as FiveTen, mesh portions and a lace bungee which I really wish FiveTen would copy: it's basically a lightweight fiveten which is better value for money.

I have really wide feet as well. I tried a Hellcat clipless: not a chance.
Got some Freerider EPS highs and they're like slippers, so comfy.
Impacts actually come up even wider.

No SPD cut out, so pure flat pedals. Oh, and did I mention the £185 price tag...?

You've described oldschool freeriders I reckon. I really don't like the newer VXI sole but the old ones are grand, and last me well- better tan my old Shimanos and about as good as my lovely but less grippy sombrios

Another + for Terrex Trail Cross.

Last year I started the transition to flats and now they're my preference, but they seem much more difficult to buy.

I have 3 pairs of SPD shoes suitable for all weathers, but flat shoes only seem to be made for average weather* 🙁

I two pairs of flat shoes: 510 freerider canvas, and some £18 flat shoes from supermarket which I use for commutes. Neither of which are great in non-average weather.

* by average weather, I mean not overly hot, nor overly cold, and not wet. **

I prefer my shimano AM45 to my five tens, really comfy, better in the wet, laces never come undone and grippy enough, but not too grippy.

My 5 10s are thousands upon thousands of miles used now. The soles do have pedal marks, but nothing major. Got to be 2 years old and also my day to day trainers as well as cycling.

I've had impacts, freeriders, freerider contacts, Sam Hill signatures, pretty much some variation of every shoe 5.10 have made. I've never had the soles make it through a season, often much less. Experience within the rest of our team is the same.

I do ride a LOT though.
