Any recommendations for a water filter, for adventures (or piss poor planning) bike rides?
Such as the Lifestraw, MSR Trailshot, Alpkits new offering, etc...
Thanks
The Sawyer Mini was the darling of the lightweight kit packers but the MSR Trailshot seems to be taking that mantle now (faster in use). I have a Sawyer which is great for occasional use and I use it in 'straw' mode mostly (although to be fair, I only use it on rare occasions if I empty my bottles and I'm nowhere near somewhere I can fill them from a tap). Have no experience of the MSR.
I've got the Sawyers mini. Small and simple. Used it with brackish reservoir water and Indian tap water! I didn't die. Only downside is it's a bit of a slow feed.
Sawyer.
Sawyer here. Its a bit sliw but then i don't really care because i'll be camping so its all about the leisure.
I also use a bigger rolabble bottle that the wee one it comes with so i can fill everything i have with filtered and carry a litre of unfiltered until required.
Trailshot does seem to be very popular but for max ease of use I have a Steripen.
Pro -
takes 45 seconds once I have filled the bottle.
I don't have to balance on a rock in the middle of a river while pumping the Trailshot.
Cons -
only does 0.5l per go and my bottle is 0.75l
you still have to fill the bottle so rock hopping still required.
Still highly recommend the Steripen though if you can find one.
Edit. It seems steripen do make a filter these days .
Thanks for the recommendations so far.

What water sources are folk using for devices like the Sawyer? Reading the Amazon reviews, I see the Sawyer doesn't filter viruses/chemicals etc where as the Drinksafe Travel Tap does to some degree. I like the idea of having a water filter as I can get caught short of water with the work I do but access to water sources is more likely to be streams/ponds around agricultural land or livestock water troughs.
I see it as more of an "ensure water from a sensible location us safe" tool rather than a"see water drink water".
I think you need an activated charcoal filter for dissolved chemicals and i think that also requires quite alot of time and refuces you flow rate.
So basically i'd nit be drinking water from farmland with the exception perhaps of upland grazing.
If its work you shouldn't berunning out of water? Your health and safety plan should cover welfare which includes access to drinking water.
Sawyer and trail shot seem like a lot of faff compared to filling a bottle and just squeezing.

Just some points on what to use. Defo use a filter as chlorine and UV can't kill cryptosporidium and then use UV or chlorine if the filter can't touch viruses and most can't.
Wouldn't use a UV pen on its own because of cryptosporidium above and also because its only effective if the turbidity is <5 (as the bugs hide in the shadow of the floaters) and the human eye can only identify a turbidity of >20.
