Im helping a mate buy a hardtail as his first bike. I know he will get hooked so he wants something good that he will want to keep not sell of to buy something posher if he gets into biking. So far the Voodoo Bokor, Boardman hardtail seem the best deal but im sure there are more to be found.

My friend is a Lump - 17ish stone @ 6 foot and lives around afan so will be on some nice rocky trials.

Has anyone got any recommendations?

Have you looked at the Cube range? I found some great bargains for my mates when they were looking - to the point that 5 of them now ride Cube hardtails!

Could you build a steel one up for him out of a mix of second hand and new parts?

I'm that kind of weight most winters and give me steel HT a bit of a hard time with no ill effects. Absolutely love the way it rides too.

I thought of the build but sounds more hasstle than its worth. £750 is a good budget, I think second hand would get you a lot of hardtail.

Good starter bike although Cubes do seem very popular and well specc'd for under £1k 🙂

I have a Boardman HT Comp and can't recommend it high enough. Good quality kit, decent air fork and light for the money. You can spend the spare cash on decent pedals
