Looking for a new pair of racey shoes (eggbeaters - does it make a difference?)
I'd like a reasonably grippy sole but don't need a full on top - i'd like to keep the weight down?
any thoughts?
I love my specialized bg pro mtb shoes
Ive got the 08 ones though, just a different colour (a more sensible red and black) and a slightly different ratchet design. The ones Ive got our the ones pictured in this review here
However, I use shimano spds - dont know what kind of fitting you need for eggbeaters.
Use both Spesh and Sidi Dragon's and the Spesh are the best. Much better fit due to BG design so it's a thumbs up for those
Sidi all the way, bit more outlay than some others to start with, but last forever had mine 4 years best clippy shoe i have ever used. also replacable soles and lots of spares available
Spesh BGs wee all over SIDIs, stiffer, more adjustable, and whilst my SIDIs were comfy off the bike, the Spesh ones are far better on.
Either BG Pro or S-Works would get the nod from me.
my 80 pound shimanos m180s? just died after 4 years of doing lots and lots of miles
and by died i mean they have split where your foot bends...still ridable but not trusted ...and i lost one ...i mean how do you loose a shoe !
replacing them with m300s though.
:mrgreen:Spesh make bikes and shoes and i actually think the shoes are better than the bikes to be honest!!
Sidi make shoes (i rest my case)
WTF? Anyone else know what he's on about!?
The fit on Spesh shoes is more carefully designed than SIDIs. SIDIs are expensive and heavily over rated.
I Big up de batty man
Another vote for Spesh...my Spesh BG Sport mtb shoes have been used every week now for about 8 years and are still going stong (although the tread of the shoe is well worn down but who cares: don't need tread when you're clipped in 🙂 )
most comfortable shoes i have used are Carnac, a nightmare to get hold of though.
SIDI is flexy junk that falls apart compaired to Spesh shoes, PG pro or S-works is where it's at. M320 shimano look good also but far too expensive now.
I've also heard that there's very little mid-sole tread on the M320s, so they tend to skip over the pedal very easily if you don't clip in.
Thanks for all the responses. I forgot about specialized ( even tho mine are!!) - so which are their lighter ones?
After 3 years my heavy ones arefine. Seems like a good place to save weight for short events.
I think sidi are out of my pricebracket really
I believe the lightest is the S-Works, followed very closely by the Expert, then the Pro. The latter is the choice of the pro race team though. I've had 2 pairs of S-Works, but I'd be inclined to get Pros next time.
I dont think they do experts, I think you want to be looking at the s-works or the pro. But unless youre pro, dont get the s-works, theyre only marginally lighter, and most of the weight lost is from padding, so theyre less comfortable. Its a proper race designed shoe. The pro is super comfy, super quick drying, super stiff, and pretty dam light. I use them on and off road, and theyre great.
Got the S-works for general riding, v comfy.
one word
sworks.................
jeeze - s-works are £170!!.. i was thinking sub £100 really
these look good?? and are my size.

I have s-works road shoes and Sidi Dragon 2 MTB shoes, both are comfy but the Sidi's have the edge IMO. That said the s-works are significantly lighter (which I would think translates into the MTB version). I got the Sidi's for MTB as they have a bit more of a substantial upper (as in you can see through the s-works ones).
Last 3 pairs were Spesh shoes. Now I got these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shimano_M230_Cycling_Shoes/5360038668/
def better than BG.
HTH
Just got hold of a pair of 2009 Spesh BG Experts and they are rather light indeed (Thanks ride4ever!), much lighter than my BG Sports.
I dont think they do experts,
They do, they used to be called 'Comp Carbon', they're about £100, and may even be lighter than the S-Works as they're only 3 velcro straps, it's certainly close.
I've had 2 pairs of S-Works MTB and one pair of S-Works road and they are incredibly comfy, not a race only shoe.
Northwave - I've been impressed by mine.
