[#4525362]

I want to replace my 3 year old DX P7 torch with something brighter and better. I've seen lots advertised on eBay offering 1800 lumens for about a tenner which seems a bit too good to be true. I'd be delighted with one offering a genuine 1000 lumens on full whack, and say 5-700 for 2-3 hours before changing the battery.

Any good experiences and/or recommendations?

Heard good things about the 1200 lumen C&B seen light.

Is it a torch you're after, or a bike light?

Not a fan of most of the single-XML lights (like C&B seen). Bright but very tight beamed, I got one to replace a P7 then quickly sold it and went back to the old light. Smudge sells a good one but it's a bit expensive IMO, you could get a much higher performing light for similiar amounts, or spend a little more for something even better.

I don't want a separate battery, so I guess it is a torch I need.

Got a couple of these - pushing it on the helmet but really bright and complete with batteries and charger for £25 delivered.

Literally have just bought these, 24 quid all in.

I'll modify an existing velco strap to attach.

Replacing my Hope Vision 1 headtorch that's never worked right and cost over 3 times the price.

Have you used yours yet enfht? Looks like a new version of my old P7. Hard to go wrong for a tenner I guess.

To get the run times you want sell the 18650's on ebay and buy some better quality ones from Smudge .

Yes , abit narrow beam but bang on for a helmet light , and stupid bright when compared to Ay ups and small single emitter exposure lights.

If the single lumen C&B seen 1200 T6s are a bit narrow/hot spotty in the beam.....what would be a good pairing for on the bars if the t6 was used on the helmet?

@ singletrackmind: what do you use as a mount for that torch?

Would those kind of torches work for riding in a dark forest? I'd like to try some of that but don't want to spend loads of money on a light.

That one that Singletrackmind links to is great. Excellent beam and good run times from a decent 18650 cell as sold by Smudge or Torchy the battery boy.

I use mine on Amy lid with a Twofish lock lock. Works a treat.

I'm probably gonna jump on the one singletrackmind linked to, but can anyone recommend a reasonable mount for it? (sorry to derail slightly).

^^ No , I dont think so , maybe Deal Extreame (DX) ^^

I mount mine using some 8" velcro ties Sir Dezinauld of Brewster got from his work. they use them to bundle up network cabling .

I have just ordered another 2 , plan to try 1 on the lid and 2 on the bars . Get a nice level of light and redundancy in case of light / battery failure .

Anyone tried the more powerful Skyray torches? The 1600 and 1200 lumen ones look quite tempting.

@singletrackmind: took your advice and ordered that torch, cheers! Going to use it on my helmet and it'll be joining an MJ872 mounted on the bars. Should be plenty, well I hope so!

I've just bought an Alpkit Gamma but will use it for climbing / camping / night running. They get good reviews for this sort of stuff. Not used it yet but it's got to be better than my Petzl Zipka! 😥

I've got a gamma. nice headtorch, have used it for commuting along the canal but nowhere near bright enough for off road MTB at speed, even when used with "proper" bar lights

Are these torches suitable for road use,or are they too bright?

I wouldn't wear one on my head on the road, and I'm not entirely sure it's legal, but angled downwards on the bars and slifhtly towards the curb should be alright.

My torch was delivered today and it looks fine - good advice about getting rid of the batteries, they and the charger look absolutely frightening!

The beam on the torch seems fine, though I've only turned it on in the house. Tonight's the night... 😉
