Just ordered an MJ-872 for the front but want a small, cheap rear light as well. Any recommendations? What do you use?

Cheers

Those smart ones anotherdeadhero linked to are fantastic. Mine is still going strong going into it's fourth winter.

+1 for smart lights. Mine have been great and very bright. Good mounts too.

Tesco have one for £5, & for £6 you can get the all but useless matching front one with it as a pair. When I got to the checkout I noticed the aforementioned front had been swapped for a second rear. 😉

The 1/2 Watt Smart ones - often 1/2 price at On-one - they were doing a front and rear set for £10 when the rear one alone retails at £12.

How do those Smart Lunar R1s compare to the holy hand grenade? I've been using Cateye's finest for ages but wondered if there's anything more recent that is better...

Wiggle has the long 5-LED cateyes at £12.50 just now, excellent deal that.

i was looking at those smart lunar R1s - but there're lots of reviews saying they can't handle the rain. are they any good in the wet then ❓

Double the power for a few more quid.

These are the lights I insist my wife and son use, bright as a VERY bright thing.

a vertically mounted fibreflare is better - good visability to the sides

I second the RSP Astrum, two very very bright LEDs which are more visible than one source of light. They are meant to be pretty waterproof but if you are using any lights in the rain you should really put some silicone grease on the joints/threads.

Not been in the rain yet, but I am just going to apply some silicon grease. Sorted either way.

Edit: If you wanted to spend a bit more, you could get the accompanying rear light off eBay for £25 and run it off the same battery (I think).

In contrast to everyone else, I really DON'T rate the Lunar R1. It let in rain and died within 3 months. Shame coz it was super bright when it did work. Got a couple of cheap (£6ish) lifeline ones from wiggle - not quite as bright, mount not as good, but sealing seems better.

I DON'T rate the Lunar R1 either.
I've had two die in the rain.

The Cateye AU100s just keep on going though.

Those Aldi rear lights look like the old Smart model.
Always found them perfect if you taped up the seal.
Aldi also had these
Always good to have some moving lights

R1 is great, unless you ride in the rain without mudguards. I've got two on my commuter, ridden in all weather with no problem.

I put one on my road bike for one ride in a bit of rain, and it failed. It's fine again now that it's dried.

I've seen fibreflares in use a few times. They're just not very bright - I didn't notice them until I was on the wheel of the person using them. Looking for somethign with side visability is all very good and well, but I would not go for it to the expense of any actual visability ...

The smarts are fine in the rain ... if you have mudguards. Otherwise a little bit of sellotape does wonders.

seem pretty noticable to me when in flash mode. the other main option for side visibility is the cateye 1100 but I have had a few break on me.
