[#1434198]

Had to pack in at Kirroughtree today on the 3rd lap when doing quite well due to (another) snapped chain, i do seem to be pretty hard on them tbh - snapped one at the merida the other year too. I know best advice is to changed fairly regularly and i certainly try to do this as well as bathe in oil and clean after rides. The chain that went today was a (maybe) 10 ride old SRAM.

I dont really want to spend loads unless its guaranteed to make a significant difference.

So, what do STW'ers recommend?

Answers on a postcard?

thanks in advance!

10 ride old? Go down the gym, get on the Watt bike and send your peak power figures off to British Cycling would be my advice...

Probably wrongly fitted them .I am a heavy lump who rides an overgeared single speed and I don't break chains. There was an article where someone got the boss of Sram to admit there is sod all difference in quality between their cheap chains and the expensive ones so go cheap and change often

smooth shifts , ease off the power.

i used to have a customer who would snap chains on a very regular basis and always blame the chain .... went out for a ride with him for some reconnasaince ... turns out he would stand up out the saddle put on the power and simultaneously shift to middle ring and ram it up the block at the back ! chain says no !

I highly recommend KMC also, or KFC for that matter it is very delicious.

But never had a problem with KMC and have pushed a few people onto them, they too now swear by them.

Assuming you're running a triple ring setup, long cage is ok.

I went through a phase of snapping nearly new chains, new chain rings seemed to fix it. A worn chain ring with a new chain seems to put all the driving force through the first link on the chain ring, knackering the chain in no time.
