Needs to fit a max-sized iphone, don’t want any zipped bits inside to scratch, ideally (semi)rigid and/or padded, water resistant or proof would be best.

Current front runner looks like the Restrap one but open to suggestions.

I have the Restrap one and it's good, but slightly smaller than the Velopac I had before. Usually got a couple of years out the Velopacs before they die.

Rapha or velopac. Similar but the velopac has a little padding. Both will fail at the zip eventually after a few years so the cheaper velopac is probably better.

AFAIK the Muc off has a zip inside it so no good.

Saw the bellroy, winced at the price.

Will have a look at the others…

"a back pocket pouch thingy"

this is one of those cases where the American term for it is better than ours

Been using a PRO Discover for years, it's showing no signs of wear and tear at all (watch the zip break next ride....)

Isn't the mucoff one just a pencil case in reality

No, this isn't about fanny packs.

I’ve used a clear pencil case for years and never seen a need to upgrade.

I use a zip lock sandwich bag. I like the idea of something posher but in practice the ones that I've tried have all been more faffy than a sandwich bag. I only have a phone (which is waterproof anyway), titchy wallet and maybe some snotrags in it. Keys go in a different pocket.

I had a Bellroy one, it didn't last anywhere near as long as you'd want it to for the price.

Yeah I get this. Ideally I’d have something with a bit of rigidity to it, or some padding - I don’t put a case on my phone. Sometimes also have stuff in the same pocket, but nothing sharp. A pouch could also be a rougher texture so it doesn’t easily fall out a pocket.

I’ve ordered a velopac, I’ll start there and see how that goes. If I don’t like it for this use it looks quite handy as a general organiser type thing for lobbing stuff in bags.

I just wrap my phone in a Buff, but it's in a waterproof case to begin with, so it's more about scratch protection and comfort. I'm guessing a modern phone with a pouch is going to be quite big. It might be easier to buy a cheapo ride phone, something like an old SE if you're just carrying it for emergencies/contactability?

Oh wait, is this a funny roadie thing, with those reach-around pockets on the back of the cycling jersey?

Sounds like the kind of thing you pick up when you next pop in to Decathlon I guess

I got one that was essentially a very thick and specially shaped ziplock bag in the goody bag from a sportive. It's split now but that was ideal - light, very waterproof, clear so you could see your screen without taking it out, and zero faff. I'd buy another if I could find one.

Waterproof phone case - or something like that.

You can use the screen inside the waterproof case

Mine is by Fickaskap but they're not made any more.

Something like this (I think)

I'm just about to replace one of these.

Lasted a few years of regular, overstuffed use in my commuter pannier. Zip bust a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah I have an old 8 I use for this, problem is a decent sim for it that doesn't deactivate with lack of use/need topping up often etc. I was on RWG which did the job with 100Mb of data a month and then occasional text to keep it active but something's up with it now and re-evaluating the bike phone as the 8 is getting a bit long in the tooth. Different number to my main one sometimes causes ride-cordination issues too, and needing to remember to set a tracker for my wife to see when I'll be back/where I've got to. I did use it for on the go navigation/route following but since moving to an Apple Watch Ultra the screen/battery has tipped over into that being fine for that purpose, with WorkOutdoors app.

But I'd take a sim recommendation too, if someone has one.

Waterproof case - I had one of those pouch things a while ago (exactly, one of the overboards), but I'd rather a bit of padding or something if possible.

See.Sense Phone & Accessories Pouch

That looks good too, looks like the flap keeps the phone away from internal zip?

Pannier use too is a good point, I do also need to do that on occasion.

I’ve got one of those Bellroy ones in iPhone mini size. Unlike IvanDobski I’ve found it to be excellent. Been going strong for 4 years or so now.

Yes, it's good for separating phone from keys or other scratchy stuff. I actually can't remember it having a zip pocket. 😅
