[#5311568]

I've got a new frame itch... So can you recommend me one.

- FS 140mm(ish) travel.
- 26" wheel compatible.
- I'm intrigued by something Carbon, but Alu suggestions welcome.
- Majority of my riding is typical UK trail centre or the local woods.
- Will have to cope with trips to wales (e.g. Brechfa) and the Alps (e.g. Les Gets).
- it's got to be fun to ride, no steep head-angled race machines please 🙂

or should I just save my money and keep my Pace?

Banshee Spitfire? Pretty slack, long wheelbase, adjustable head angle and can take 650b wheels if that's your thing.

I've got a Rune V2 and have been mega impressed with it so far.

Failing that, your Pace us pretty damn nice.

+1 for the TRc, I like to call it my hilarious cheater bike 😛 it's light as **** so can be pedalled all day but still encourages you to be a hooligan when you're up to speed, not just downhill.

I know its not what you asked but I gotta know....

Why do you want to move on from the Pace?

The 140mm Saracen Ariel I had was ace, they sell as a frame only too. Like a mini downhill bike but can be pedalled uphill too.

Funny a Blur TRc seems to be the number one suggestion so far...

I really like this frame and it I feel it is a perfect match to my riding style. The only think that concerns me is the limited travel...?

never felt limited on mine.... we went to innerleithen recently, and I took my TRc and my Covert.

My strava times on the Cadon bank descent were faster on the Santa Cruz 🙂

Dave

edit: just looked up my strava to check the times, I've got 14th overall on Cadon Bank (woop!)

No one mentioned IBIS yet ?

The Special Blend is the SL frame and is a pretty good package, must tick the "fun' box too..

Have you ridden a 29er?

And whatever you get make sure its tapered fork compatible, as I'm looking for a new 140mm fork and an awful lot are tapered - which I don't want...

@drifting_james

I really enjoy riding my pace. It's certainly proved itself to be surprisingly capable bike.

I just feel like something lighter with a bit more 'fun' geometry would suit me better.

I've only had three bikes in the last 15 years. A '96 Klein Pulse, an '01 Kona Munimula and this Pace. Now I've finished uni and have settled into a new job. I want to make the most of my cycling before I have to settle down and the misses restricts money spending on bikes.

Stumpy Evo. Maybe not soul-stirring, but absolutely ungodly brilliant. Whyte 146 if you want something sort of similiar, but more interesting and less good.

I've considered IBIS but the geometry of the frame puts me off (I never thought I'd say that!). More race than fun.

I've ridden a 29er and it's not what I'm looking for out of a bike. I want something that will put a smile on my face when I throw it at every berm, jump or drop I can find.

... I might be wrong on the IBIS, someone must be able to correct me...

This is maybe just my preferences but I've not ridden a Mojo that really felt right, they all feel like they've just squeezed extra travel onto a shorter travel platform... Nothing wrong with a 69 degree head angle, on a 100mm bike but it's silly on a 5 incher IMO, why lug around the extra travel but have such XC geometry?

YMMV of course 😉

That's consistent with what I've hear elsewhere Northwind. Along with the blur LTc the Mojo SLR ticks all the right travel and weight boxes, but from what information I can gather there geometry is a bit old school xc orientated.

Any other recommendations out there?

(@alfabus I see your 11th place Cadon bank on your TRc and raise you a KOM on Brechfa Raven trail black grade downhill on my Pace 😉 )

I wouldn't say old school/xc, it's just a much more balanced sort of a bike than most in the bracket... And tbh from a big trailbike, I don't want balance. But watching Crawfy on his (he's on an HD now but then the HD seems steep to me too) shows how capable it is, in the right hands.

Running a Fox 36 150 Talas on my Mojo SL and I would describe it as "playfull" wound out and "racy" wound down..

Trek Remedy with a proper fork instead of the Float 32 they still insist on speccing it with? Goes up and along like an XC whippet, but really controlled without blanding everything out on the way back down. If I didn't run out of money 3 days after I get paid it's what I'd have. As it is, I have a Saracen Ariel and it's absolutely fine.

So on my short list according to this thread so far, I've got strong votes for a:

Blur LTc
Ibis Mojo
Saracen Ariel

Then also suggested

Spec stumpy evo
Trek remedy

Ok then...Yeti 575. I love mine because it does everything from downhill at Cwmcarn to normal XC stuff and everything inbetween. Nice all-rounder that can take a good beating. Probably find some pretty good deals on frame only too.

I have noticed a lot of Orange 5's around, they seem to be the Porsche 911 of the bike world.

The yeti 575 has a very similar design to the SC blur and an intense carbine, come to think of it. maybe that's the winning suspension design?

blur and carbine are both VPPs, but the 575 is a linkage actuated single pivot (hinged on the chainstay), so a very different beast.

If you're serious about that, you haven't got the wrong bike - you've got the wrong missus..

I've ridden a lot of 140mm full sus bikes, including the rc405 you've got. There's barely anything in it for me. The only bike that felt any better is the Turner 5spot.

The pace is a more planted bike than the Mojo too.

Last chance to get a Blur LTc as the LT goes this year - shame really. Mine just arrived. Don't really bother looking at the numbers, it rode exceptionally well on demo which is what counts.

If you're dead set on 26" Ritchie at silverfish was talking about getting one last batch of 5 spots made. Failing that, the burner at 650b.

Ariel - I've put a Lyrik on mine and it's quickly becoming my do-it-all bike. Fun fun fun, and I will admit to a little inverse brand snobbery. And it was cheap as chips.

A vote for Blur LTc. Some may consider the geometry 'old-school' but I went from a 'New-school' geometry ASR5, to the LTc, and haven't cared one bit. I think people get too hung up on all that crap to be fair. The LTc with 150 revs has a 68 HA anyway so its not like its vertical or anything! I can confirm that it rides superbly, a massively capable bike, that can really take big hits and drops, but still pedals well enough to fly on the flat and uphill. In fact I find it a far better climber than my ASR5, with far less pedal bob. I just can't ride it enough!

Liteville 301.

Ticks many, many boxes. Rides very nice and very capable, and extremely future proof.

Can be set up with either 32, 34, or 35-6 stanchion forks, can have 140 or 160 mm travel with the same shock (different rocker plates), even accepts 650 wheels in sizes M and above.

And - have I mentioned it rides very nice and is very capable? And I've ridden Turner DW Spot, Pivot Mach 5/5.7, Mojo HD and loads of other top bikes.

a vote for banshee spitfire from me ,it is 140mm travel, has adjustable flipchips to switch the head angle 66,66.5,67 and bb heights 13,13.5,14 and will take a 140-160mm fork. its really fast downhill, corners like its on rails and loves air time:) absolutely love mine:)

In the STW tradition of recommending your own bike. I'm really enjoying my Turner 5 spot.

DW link is a great suspension system
