Is this meant to be a “play bike” as a contrast to the DH race weapon?
Or is it meant to be a DH-lite that he can pedal to the local trails and self uplift himself around places like FOD as DH training?

Really it's a bit of a 'everything other than DH and race days... so pretty much 80% or more of his riding days. Then it'd also be arguably taken to DH races as a 'oh crap i've broken....." and jump on this to at least get a finish on a DH race day.... certainly at most of the tracks anyway.

Are mullets allowed when he’s said he doesn’t like 29ers so far?

I'll be the nudge towards 29er that he needs....!

I don't even know if he's ever ridden one.... LOL.

I think his thoughts on 29ers are mostly born from my previous thoughts before i got the Trek and tried a decent modern one 😀

I reckon the owners of STW should chip-in the extra 100 quid for the Status. Your threads have been responsible for a disproportionate amount of forum traffic over the last few weeks. You're owed some of Charlie's arse butter at least!

i like to think i’m getting a bargain.

If I chip in the £25 will you buy me a bike too? 😂

Mate has a Remedy 8 in ML I think. Its too 'short' for me - I'm 5'9 so I tried a L as its a fabulous bike in lots of regards. Just couldn't get on with it and that was with the bike shop swapping stems etc.

whether we’d be better sticking with the Rockshox on the blue one over the full Ohlins in terms of maint and setup. I get the impression the Ohlins are a bit more needy in terms of servicing?

Ooh crikey. 🤔
Ah well. I've switched my view on this now. I really want you to get the blue Enduro just for the Lols of " it's completely eaten yet another Rockshox shock" posts every week until you sell it again.

I don’t think the status is aimed at 100 mile xc slogs 🤣

Sounds like the perfect bike for the lad - burly / decent geometry / decent brakes / decent fork etc. And a gateway to full 29er in the future I reckon.....

it’s a simple case of not opening the thread

Oh, I know, but now I'm just concerned that your behaviour is artificially inflating the price of second hand bikes for the rest of us.

If you post it now though we can all tell you why it's the wrong decision before you pick it up?

Does your lad read this thread? Does he know even about it?

It reminds me of one of those weird projects where a non-league footy club is run by popular vote on the interweb 😉

Perhaps we could club together and buy him a 'Team ST Forum' jersey.

Phew, for a minute there I thought you were going to forget that you punted the Enduro because he wasn’t allowed the GT plus another nice bike 😉

No, he's out at a summer party. We've been in discussion via Whatsapp and when i sent him the Status his reply was "that looks brilliant, but it's too expensive, are there any cheaper ones we can buy"

He'll be home later, we pick it up in the morning and head straight out for a days trail riding, was going to be Cwmcarn, but i think we'll do FoD/Parkend as we know the trails so will be better for getting used to the bike.

Oh i remember that conversation. LOL... i remember it well... never let it be said i'm a soft touch hey.

Excellent!
I know of two very happy Status owners the same age as your boy, he shouldn't be disappointed with this one.

Looks nice, should give him a bit more more stand over than the large Enduro as its more on par with the medium one

I’d like that bike myself tbh - looks a great option at the moment. Plus it looks pretty cool too.

I’d have thought Cwmcarn round the Twrch with a run or 2 down Y Mynnyd would be in order!

Dunno mate, he's not ridden those so was thinking some familiarity may be the plan.

Fair enough - he’d probably love the Twrch and Y Mynnyd. I tend to ride up the road then do the tech climb and start off road with the fun bit - it’s swoopy berms and rollers / jumps - then a straight flat out rocky bit. Some more swoopy stuff through some woods then up one more climb and you come out by a road. The Twrch carries on but if you go up the road (watching out for the uplift minibus coming down) and take the first gravel track on your right it takes you up to the start of the downhill. I reckon the right hand option stying right at the top is the most fun and then halfway down after the tunnel taking the left hand option that says ‘harder’ but there’s nothing hard about it. It’s just flat out fun really.

It’s a proper climb though innit, FOD is just a good crack for sessioning the same sections over and over to get used to the bike.

That's the plan

Up to top, then session the flat rooty one, session the jumpy one on the left, then the flowy one. Then will be a ski run or two before bottom of gbu and then skills area. Obviously with changes and setup and pizza

Bike great, but spent most of the day with Katy being coached and riding his GT, so spent maybe an hour on the Status only.

It'll get ridden plenty more this weekend.
