I need to replace the rear coil shock on my old Kona Coiler. It's measurements are 200x51 for 150mm travel, giving a 3:1 leverage ratio.
I'd like to replace the old Fox DHX 4.0 coil shock with an air shock, but I'm wondering if the ratio is too high for it to work properly?
will surely vary by shock.
slightly relevant, i increased travel on a FS frame, taking the ratio from 2.5 to 2.75, the shock coped, but you could tell that it wouldnt want anymore.... without a specific tune.
Same as five. Need to make sure the tune is right or it'll struggle.
Think Yeti 575 is 3:1 ratio, and works fine with RP23 shock.
After hunting around a bit there seem to be at least a few more bikes out there with 3:1 on an air shock, so I'll go for it. Thanks.
It all depends on a number of factors - my Marin is close on 3:1 but the leverage rates change significantly at various points in it's travel. A specialist tune can mitigate against this, so it's wise to budget for this with your purchase.
Well they sold a Coilair for a few years, which was a coiler with an air shock, so I'm sure it'll be fine.
We had a Coiler Primo for a while, came with a DHX 5 coil. Swapped over for a DHX 5 Air which worked great for Kevin and then for Katie when she grew into it. Eventually sold it to someone on Southern DH who said he was doing some silly jumps and stuff with it.
