Have a friend with a 2006 big hit, spring is way too soft so was looking at a heavier spring. 450lb bottoms out literally all the time so was going to go right up to 550lb. 14.5/15 stone rider.

Spring is 8.75 x 2.75 so what would happen if you stuck a 550 x 3" spring on there? its a manitou one going on a fox shock. currently there seems to be a large amount of spare thread on the shock. could this not be filled up with spring or am i missing something?

I would think its ok . You cant do it the other way round though, as a 2.75 spring in a 3 inch travel shock is likely to go coilbound before it does the full travel..

manitou springs are bigger than fox (diameter) so it may not fit, different spring manufacturers measure spring sizes in various ways too so best to check with someone like TFTuned.

i had this when i got a coil and tf said it was fine, you can run a longer spring no probs, but if you run a short one it compresses fully before the shock and you lose travel and can damage the shock
