Looking at getting a new rear mud tyre, what are the Maxxis Medusa's like?

Any other suggestions worth looking at for my Zesty?

I run a 1.9 Panaracer Trailraker on my Zesty in the mud

All mud tyres are much better than a non mud tyre, just get one, but I would have it on the front, if you only want to run one.

Amazingly good if you're riding in proppa continuous mud and not just patches here and there.

Squirmy and wobbly on hardpack though and absolutely lethal on wet roots and rocks

Medusa is a lot like a Mud X ime, same advantages (ie, good at mud), same disadvantages (not good at not-mud). Haven't tried a Storm, but they get recommended a lot by people who've used the others.

Unless your riding's totally defined by mud, I'd say just get a sensible mud-compatible knobbly.

I have a set of Medussas and at Mayhem this year they were amazing.

On my local trails where it's mixed they perform as rocketman describes.
Brilliant in the mud, sticky on the road, squirmy on hardpack and interesting on roots.

Am I right in thinking the conti Barron is like the rubber queen but with a bit more of a leaning towards the mud?

Any recommendations for a winter tyre for the Peaks then? I had been thinking of Mud Xs but given the above maybe something else would be suited to the half rocky/half boggy nature of the Peaks.

Best point of comparison for a Baron is a supertacky swampthing. But less draggy, and massively better out of mud. Fantastic tyres but still slower than an XC mud tyre by a fair margin. Not small, either (almost the claimed size) so harder to maintain good mud clearance.

On the front I reckon it's exactly what you're after, qtip. Though I'm not massively convinced about the strength of hte sidewalls. Never had any problems but they feel thin.

Beaver is better allround than a medusa but doesn't shed as well
