[#5687318]

Cut a long story short I'm in need of a new rear mech and I'm hoping to convert to 1x10 or 1x11 but won't be till after Christmas.

Now if i bought say a x10 mech would I be able to run this on my current 3x9 set up until I convert to enable me to continue riding without buying a x9 replacement for the time being.

I hope this isn't too much of a dumb question to ask.

Strictly speaking ~ no, you can't do it. A nine shifter won't work with a ten mech. Best bet would be to buy a cheap used mech off the classified as a stop gap for a few months.

A road 9 shifter will work a road 10 mech. OP didn't say what he was riding did he?

Sorry to bump my own thread but I was reading through this and from what I can gather Evans seems to think you can do it.

And yes it is a mountain bike not a roadie.
