After a muddy wet ride over Christmas my rear mech has suddenly become much worse at shifting up. It seems like the spring isn't strong enough as it is properly adjusted so when it does shift it drops into gear it just takes longer than it used to. I have given it an overhaul and lubed etc but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. The cable seems to run smoothly

It is only an Altus (I am still running 8 speed), so is it just cheap and not up to the job or is there another adjustment I don't know about or is it new cables/outers time (they have only done a few rides). Also I have finally split my rear Tioga DH tyre (I accidentally sold all my other wheels/bikes/tyres and ended up with that left at the back of the shed). What would make a good pair with a high roller up front for generally riding - another one?

Those mechs aren't to great with there spring tension, found they don't last to long. Try a deore going cheap or something. Other then that have the cable outers gone rusty at the ends. Happend to me after a muddy ride, and it doesn;t shift well. If you go for a high roller, get a 60a for the rear or a minion, seem to have better rolling resistance.

Use your hand to allow it to move without any cable bolted to it.

If it seems better, try new cable or clean/lube your outer and check everywhere the cable goes from shifter to mech.

Sometimes it is just a case of elimination with new parts e.g. new or old mech and new cable.

I might be stating the bleedin obvious, but if you just installed new cables and done a few rides have they stretched and just need adjusting?
