[#6034296]

Awesome day out in Cwmcarn yesterday apart from general graunching and weird gear behaviour...

Anyway it looks like my bike ('10 Five Pro) has suffered the Hope Pro 2 axle snap at the free hub, common with the old maxle according to t'interweb.

Well, the spares to rebuild it bearing in mind the free hub is trashed anyway come to not far off a new full rear build from CRC. There are others out there (Nukeproof Generator?) too.

Now here's the question: do I blow another £50 on the updated Maxle that isn't tapered, or is there a better (cheaper?) alternative? Do the Hope Pro Evos not need a new Maxle as they're thicker? or ditch hope and are other hubs stronger? Yes I've searched the forum, but am still confused!

Thanks in advance.

I upgraded my Pro 2 to Evo spec to stop this happening- tracked down an Evo freehub on a classifieds ad and bought the other bits new and I think it ended up costing about £50. Swapping to a non-tapered maxle does reduce the risk apparently but it doesn't fix it- both the Pro 2 axles I snapped were in full-thickness axles not tapered maxles and I'm not alone.

("legendary Hope customer service" in this case involved offering to sell me the bits to fix their iffy hub, for RRP- but it might be worth giving them a call on the off chance as they know fine well the Pro 2 wasn't fit for use with a maxle, they might do better by you than they did for me)

Thanks: It doesn't sound ideal, does it?!

Looking at the cost of it, I can get a Nukeproof Generator/Mavic combo for only a few quid more and clearly none of the hassle of rebuilding/sourcing parts.....

I'll go sleep on it! I'll give Hope a call in the morning to see if there's anything there. If they don't want my custom, then I guess I'll go with alternative setups in the future....

Have you taken it back to bike shop? This happened to me on my five last year. Hope sorted hub via lbs and lbs swapped the maxle foc too. Bike was out of warranty period bit it's a known fault, worth a try

This happened last year to mine and Hope fixed FOC. That was using a DT Swiss maxle.

Well, just a word of thanks:

Hope are replacing the axle FOC as are Fisher the Maxle.

Great service and should be back on the trails next week!

Well, I guess it's delayed an expensive result. Have gone for a steel freehub replacement as the alloy one is a mess. But it's saved a heap!
