It is time to replace my cassette and chain, thinking fo going with soemthing like 11-26 as opposed to the usual 11-32 or 34 as I dont really use the real granny gears.

Was thinking of an SRAM PG970 downhill or similar. Am I missing some important drawback or coudl I run anything at the back, even a road cassette?

Yep, you can run anything you want, you'll end up shifting on the front mech more, if that bothers you!

Yeah, any 9 speed cassette will be fine, Shimano, or SRAM. Road ones also OK.

I'm running an 11-28 SRAM OE cassette I got quite cheap from Evans. Saves a fair amount of weight if that interests you. I found I never used my 32t or 34t, so I'm not missing out on anything really. Only slight problem is on one really steep and slippy section at a race, as I couldn't get traction in that high a gear, but then in those scenarios it is as quick to run anyway, and there is no guarantee I would have got up in 32t or 34t anyway.
