Mrs aracer wants a rear bike rack for her car - I was thinking of getting a high mount one to avoid number board faff, but now wondering how much trouble is a numberboard for a low mount, or is there any way of using a low mount without one? I presume plenty of people don't bother but it does appear to be illegal and I've heard of people being stopped by the rozzers (not to mention the issues if somebody rear-ends you having not seen your brake lights).

So what do people do? Any cheap and easy solutions?

i have the same issue - no light plug thing for a full number board, so i just put a number plate over the bikes with a bungie, on loing drives (1hr+) i take the front and rear wheels off if i can.
having said that i've never been stopped (in 20 years) driving without a number board, although i've heard others have.

I did a towbar on our zafira. The rear electrics is a plug-in module so no cutting or soldering and took a few minutes to run. I was close to getting the pro's to do the job but all things considered, it was the easiest car job I've ever done.
Legalities aside, If someone does drive into the back of you smashing thousands of pounds worth of bikes, you really don't want to give any insurance co's room to wriggle. Even if it goes 50:50 you can be sure your own insurer will not cover things being towed or externally mounted.
