I'd like to have a go at re-rimming an old wheel using a Mavic XM317 rim. The old rim is a Mavic, but I've no idea which model and it's at least 10 years old. Is there a dimension I can use to see if the old spokes can be re-used before I buy the new rim? Any other tips from you wheelbuilding experts?

The effective rim diameter's one of the more crucial measurements in calculating spoke length, or in your case seeing if your old spokes will work in the new build. If you can't look up the rim model you'll need to measure it.
