A mate (and it really is a mate before you start) is trying to join a chain where he's pushed the pin out completely. It's a cheapo singlespeed (kid's BMX) chain.
Is there a way of getting the pin back in?
Carefully sometimes you can do it without bending the plates, but it'll always be weak there. TBH though, I'd make it a link shorter, and do it properly.
Just use a standard chain rivet / breaker tool and hold the pin in the right alignment with a pair of long nose pliers. Its a right fiddle but it can be done.
I'd use and extra joining link tho - split link, power link whatever is appropriate
Worth investing in a Park chain tool. I've tested mine loads of times (at home and on the trails) and once you've got the knack, you soon realise how reliant you are on it.
EDIT: I'm not saying your mate should buy one just for this particular fix - I'm talking to the massive in general
Cheers, TBH i told him that you couldn't. Might be easier for him to just buy a new chain.

probably
If it's a BMX chain he could just replace that with a joining link which doesn't need a chain tool to fit- they cost at most £3 and the chain will be the same length. Saves 15 quid or so on a new chain.
Like these- (any bike shop will have some in)
Even better SpokesCycles - I'll nip round the LBS, pop up to my mates and swap it for beers!
