Just taken delivery of a new bike, and it appears to have rapid rise gears. Is it just the rear mech that is rapid rise specific, or are the shifters rapid rise specific as well?

Ta

Just the rear mech. Take it off and throw it in the skip where it belongs then buy a proper mech.

HTH.

Yep, throw it in the skip. Preferably the one outside my house.
I much prefer RR.

When you get used to it (in 10 minutes) you will realise that 'normal' is just wrong and RR is brilliant.

Rapid rise is much much better.

Get used to it, takes about an hour and you wont go back. Being able to change gears when pedalling uphill is a proper bonus.

Not yet RD, taken some bits off it to set it up to my liking (seatpost, stem etc) so when i have got replacements and it looks like a normal bike i'll post some pics up.

RR is plenty good, just give it a chance. I wouldn't express a preference for either type, I use both on different bikes. Like 'em both and can switch between them no trouble at all.

How much for the lump of crap you don't want? I'm interested as well (although realise there is likely to be a queue!

So you don't need specific shifters for RR rear mechs?

RR is very very good and is brilliant when pedalling uphill. The spring works in your favour and stops you twanging your mech. I though switched to SRAM and X.0/X9 stuff as the shifts are way way more positive compared to normal Shimano shifters and that applies to XTR, XT etc as I've used them all. I was always a big S fan until I tried X.0 mechs and shifters and I doubt I will ever go back.

RR is the best.....have even converted my 12yr old daughter to it. She now gets up more hills coz she can change gear while pedalling uphill

DSB - you can't have steed (or stable) but mere "bike" is worst of all

Among others, you can and should use (assuming the gnar factor is appropriate):

singular: sled, rig, ride, mount, machine, tool, weapon
plural: quiver, arsenal, harem (?-with caution), fleet
