Kinda like running in the rain. Find it refreshing and happy to be out running or walking for 2 hours in the rain.
But, absolutely hate riding in the rain. Don't know why. Just find it spoils the ride and makes it miserable. Id rather wait for a dry day or travel somewhere that isn't raining. If it rains while I'm out on my bike I'll find shelter till it stops.
Anyone else find similar?
I'm fairly ambivalent to rain, but I really dislike proper strong wind.
Rains fine but I’m with tthew when it comes to wind. Really don’t like riding in a strong wind
Like you I like running in the rain - I’ve been out this afternoon in it and really enjoyed myself. Mtb I’m not that keen but it wouldn’t stop me going out, but road riding nah, not now I don’t have to commute! Too many years doing that in all weathers!!
I'm another who quite likes rain but hates wind.
Hate it. I've spent my whole life working under the sea. If I'm getting wet I want paid :o)
Wind is annoying but I'd choose wind over rain. If its raining I'll stay in and watch TV.
Hate both. I could manage rain better if I didn’t need to wear varifocals, it’s a PITA not being able to see. Can’t wear contacts, I’ve tried.
I’m a fair weather rider these days.
* Waits for the inevitable, ‘wrong clothing’ chestnut…………………..
I love a torrential downpour but only if I’m safely in the warm. I’ll ride in any conditions but won’t necessarily enjoy it. Late spring and early autumn are my favourite riding seasons; it’s warm, but not too warm and the trails are generally really grippy.
Depends, today was in woods, so a little shelter from the rain, but as it was the first rain in a few days it makes everything extra slippy and as there's lots of roots it was dicey in areas.
I find riding in rain in winter easier as you're used to it, heavy summer showers where it's not quite warm enough to dry you quick are annoying, as for the wind, nobody like the wind, do they?!
There is nothing better than a blast about in the pissing rain. prefferable a singlespeed or fixedgear
Running or cycling its all good. I hate cycling in the heat* especially in a forest, its hot, uncomfortable and i start to feel sick. I quite enjoy it runnign though.
*18+
I've just been out for an hour to enjoy the rain! Will only ride off road when it's wet, hate getting buzzed by cars on wet roads. I adore it in spring and autumn when it releases all those lovely smells.
But, absolutely hate riding in the rain. Don’t know why. Just find it spoils the ride and makes it miserable. Id rather wait for a dry day or travel somewhere that isn’t raining.
Let me guess, you have shimano 12 speed too 🙁
I don't mind it raining if I'm on a ride, but I'm cat like if its already pissing down. Hate head winds but that pretty much just life really, but the plus side of that is tailwinds.
Hate it. I'll only do biking when it's dry and dusty. Seasonal hobby as far as I'm concerned.
Riding in the rain I dont mind. Complete PITA drying everything and trying to stop the rust appearing overnight!
Wind absolutely detest it. 20 years Living on the coast with prevailing westerlies that howl in your face from the North, east, south and west…basically whichever direction you face and I still havent gotten used to it or learned to enjoy it.
Hate rain looking out of the window. Once I'm in it I enjoy it. Case in point today. Got to put my short sleeve Gabba on (best bit of kit I've ever owned) and felt totally at home in the rain. Weirdly I won't windsurf in the rain and you're going to get wet anyway. But that's more down to vision issues with contact lenses.
Won't ride in the rain, but work in it - have good waterproofs. It's still annoying though
Despise wind - riding, working, sat at a pub, rolling a fag, anything
Being in the caravan in torrential rain is fun and cosy - unless trying to sleep
Don’t like going out if it’s already raining, but don’t mind a soaking whilst I’m out. There’s something nice about hooning through the forest when it’s pissing down, but…
Let me guess, you have shimano 12 speed too 🙁
This.
Hate it. It washes away my will to live.
Rain on or in the water is magic.
Love being out in a boat when it's wangin it.
Love rain when it's a novelty.
Not so much when it's the norm.
I love a rainy ride, but still my natural inclination is to avoid. I miss the days of not checking the forecast before heading out and ending up drenched.
I ride in winter and it’s OK but I LOVE riding in summer when it’s dry.
I should move somewhere drier really.
I use to like it now I absolutely hate it.
When it comes to outdoor hobbies I struggle to find the motivation to leave the house when it's raining but oddly don't mind the rain if I'm already out when it starts raining.
I'd rather get soaked to the skin that ride on the turbo.
Very much depends what time of year. Absolutely a rainstorm after a dry hot period, but when youre into your 5th month of seemingly non stop grey skies and everything is perma wet, it gets really soul destroying. Living on the West coast can eat your joy some times.
Did a 4hr ride in non-stop rain today, not through choice. I usually don't go out if it looks like rain but I'm glad I did today as I wouldn't have experienced the woods in the mist or the extra-vivid greens. I was soaked but it's always possible to find positives in something. The bike might need a bit of TLC to recover though.
Rainy trails = quiet trails around here.
I love the heat. Even during a heat wave. Don't mind the cold but prefer summer. Still just hate riding in the rain. I'd rather sit on the turbo.
I don't mind being out in the rain as long as it's not freezing cold, kind of comes with the territory as a postie, but I won't road bike ride in the rain out of choice. Cleaning drivetrain after wet ride is too much agro and drivetrain bits are even more silly in price these days. I did pop out in the dry window on the hybrid earlier, resisting the temptation to set up the turbo.
Wind - Rain - Cold
Any 2 are fine, all 3 are horrible.
In truth, wind is the one that has me questioning being out. Rain is generally fine.
I'm the same as the OP, love running in it, hate riding in it. Also hate the mud. Hotter the better and dry, dusty trails for me.
Maybe Scotland wasn't the ideal place to live....
With rain, cold and wind I always think that it's not too bad individually, but a combination of any two is shit.
I hate the heat and find rain a good way of keeping cool.
I love running in the rain - beat a ten year standing PR up a hill last week by running up it in the dark in heavy rain with a headtorch, must have focused me!
I don't mind riding in the rain, but it's annoying when it's so wet the trails aren't fun.
I'd prefer not to ride in the rain. But it doesn't bother me. Usually it wouldn't put me off going for a ride.
One thing I don't like about it is wearing a waterproof jacket while cycling. Hate the things, find I get wet anyway, never really found a proper breathable cycling waterproof, so generally go without and just accept that I am going to get wet.
Same as you OP. When I used to run I liked running in the rain but I hate riding in the rain. It doesn't actually rain that much in the south though. I always cycle at around 08:00 every Saturday and Sunday all year around. The amount of days when it is actually raining when I am riding is very, very low.
It doesn't bother me that much, up until a few hours in. At which point I just get fed up.
I'm odd in that I enjoy being out in 'wild' weather. Particularly if I'm tucked up warm and dry in suitable clothes. Even more so when it's snow / cold / winter.
Rain and canoeing really doesn't make a difference.
Walking the issue is more underfoot conditions, flooding streams etc.
The biggest faff with riding in the rain is dealing with the bike and kit when you get home. Even on the road bike it's enough to put me off, so I tend to go out in the rain if I really need a ride, otherwise I'll use it as an excuse for a day off. Though oddly properly biblical rain is somethin I enjoy while riding - I wouldn't go out in it if it had started, but love it on a summers ride where the heavens open and you get so wet that you wouldn't get any wetter if you were to jump in a lake.
Wind can do one though - strong or gusty winds put me right off road riding, then I'll bail out of riding in the woods once the trees start creaking
I hate going out for a ride in the rain so I just won't bother going out if it's already peeing down but I don't mind being caught in the rain on the bike if the ride started dry. Quite enjoy walking in the rain and wild weather though, all wrapped up then back home for tea and biscuits!
Work wise I hate the rain cause I can't work, but love that it makes things grow .
Bike wise I really don't enjoy setting off it the rain but I'd carry on if it starts raining while I'm out.
If it's proper raining (a little light rain isn't too bad) before I leave the door then 90% of the time I'll sack it off. I'm all good though if it starts raining while I'm out. Wind though...I barely rode outside through January and February this year because of the wind (on road/gravel anyway, doesn't bother me so much at MTB speeds).
Uplift days, weekends away etc, I'm mentally committed to riding whatever the weather so it doesn't bother me.
