Which Rear tyre, to pair with a Nobby Nic 2.4 Front:
Racing Ralph
- or -
Rocket Ron
... and, which width? I'm thinking 2.25
For this price go rocket ron, I ordered myself 2 as they were so cheap 😆
Triple Nano or Dual 127 EPI ?
(whatever all that means)
I asked a similar question myself on another site and this was mentioned:
With the Ralph having a lower tread they should have less rolling resistance compared to a Ron in better in drier conditions.personally I would run a Ron on the rear if its wet or slippery as I find the Ralphs have minimal traction on anything other than dry compact ground.
Iits worth also noting though that the Ralphs have a tougher carcass than the Rons so are more durable.
To me that suggests that Rons give better grip in wet conditions but Ralphs roll faster in the dry and last longer.
Given that our summer is unpredictable to say the least I'm thinking of getting a Ron. I wonder how much the difference in rolling resistance will show?
Choice of compound seems to be EVO or ORC but which is best I have no idea?
For £20 from On-One, think I'll buy a Rocket Ron.
At that price, even if I'm not convinced it's no big deal.
I got the dual 127 one ❓ Happy wth them so far!
2.4 Ralph every time.
Rons are based on the same skinny carcass as Freds and a 2.25 Ron is at least 10mm lower-profile than a 2.25 Nic. Combining one with a 2.4 Nic is like combining an inner tube with a lifebelt. Ron's off-road grip, acceleration and rolling resistance are all top-drawer they are truly the XTR of the tyre world. But there's a price to pay they are fragile, expensive and visibly worn after every ride IME you're looking at a lifetime of a few hundred miles.
I'd go for the Ralph on the back,in fact that's what I do...Gave me plenty of grip at a very wet & muddy Rough Ride, when lots of people were having problems with grip.....
I had smart sams for the rough ride.... twas awful 🙁
RaRa's all the way.
2.25 rocket Ron. Perfect for our questionable summer!!!!
Ron has better grip than Ralphs, but would last longer on the back.
I used to always race with RR/NN combo, but now use Rons front and back as I much prefer them for grip.
Ron's here too.
I had Nic's for Winter & Ralph's for summer, but found summer rain on hard trails too greasy for Ralph's so opted for Ron's all round.
And given the price from On-One it was an easy decision.
Using the performance version tubeless as the side walls are more robust.
cheers for the helpful responses guys, think I'll go for the Rocket Ron ...
Just a quick update...
I run RoRo 2.25s on my race bike, they're most definitley not a trail tyre - I ruined a couple of pairs in Scotland, they're very soft and not ideal on granite.
They've been awesome, two 12 hours solos, one 6 hour solo and a 24 hour solo - no punctures.
The Ralph is an excellent tyre too, but I find it a bit more sketchy on the rear for loose or wet conditions.
Going around the trails I'll be running a RoRo front and a RaRa rear, racing - most conditions RoRo both ends or dry RaRa both ends.
For what it's worth, I eventually bought a Rocket Ron
2.25 Folding Snakeskin, a mere £38.69 from Fawkes Cycles 8)
