[#12729479]

I look after a friend's sons bikes.

One is a lovely old Orange steel P7 26" it has a RF evolve 3x 10sp chainset in a very wobbly race face x-type threaded bb. It looks like a standard HT2, so can i just use any threaded 24mm bb feom shimano?

Thanks

Ian

Yes. It'll be a tight fit in the plastic top hats though.

Or amything else that will simplify the job?

I think it is a straight swap if you are using a 24mm crankset.

Obviously you should be looking at getting one in your favorite colour 😁 quite like the Uberbike ones.

I want from Raceface to Hope from memory.

No, they're rubbish!
A shimano bb will be fine, a Hope bb would be better😀

Yeah avoid the RF ones!
Every RF bottom bracket I've ever had, be it x-type or 30mm has failed quickly.

Get either an XT or Saint BB, normally can be found for £20ish.

My general rule with RF kit is that if it contains bearings, avoid, otherwise go for it*.

* - caveat - except carbon cranks.

The early RF BB's were rubbish as they used max/full compliment bearings (the cage less type used in suspension pivots designed for high loads, not spinning) which failed quickly as a result. The reputation's stuck.

But yes, shimano will be fine.

N.b. they work by tightening up the bolt fully. You adjust the space by adding/removing shims which compress the rubber "X-ring" that's compressed into either crank arm. When swapping to a new BB you might need to add/remove spacers until there's slightly less than no gap (i.e. the rubber spacer is compressed <1mm).

Yep, pretty much interchangeable.

I was using up my spares and currently have one side RF and one side Shimano on one of my bikes.

As above, may be a bit tight but grease the spindle and it should be fine.
