Spent some adjusting them to the new bike today.  I’m a Race Blade virgin so...

Obviously I’ve put the provided protective tape under the brackets - do I need to put some under the “band” all around as well?

I have put PVC tape on my frame where the bands go but maybe I'm just paranoid after the previously fitted Giant mudguards cut clean through the seat stays on my Defy.

I’ll take that as a Yes...

Muck gets under the bands and the vibrations abrade the paint - you need to fully protect the paint

Any recommendations for additional tape?  I think I remember something about 3M tape a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure which one exactly?

As long as you dont need a lot - it comes with a large square panel for this purpose from which you can cut the appropriate shapes - Wiggles own Lifeline protective patches sheet is good value and the tape seems to work well for £4.

I've just used duck tape. It's a winter bike, it's supposed to look 'functional' and it's under the brackets anyway. Besides, you haven't got time to be worrying about the look of the bike, your mind should be full of 'will I ever be warm / dry again?'
