Hi - I'm off to Queenstown in NZ for work towards the end of October. I hear there's a lot of MTB riding around there and wanted to get in a bit of riding (ideally with an uplift to start) for a morning to shake out the cobwebs. I see there's a cable car to the top but should I be looking for a DH bike to rent, a trailbike? I'm going to keep it relatively chill as I don't want to be on the other side of the planet having crashed, trying to get medical help when I should be at work so nothing I can't roll. Any recommendations for where to ride and where to rent?
The cable car/gondola is really well organised and takes you where you need to go. Personally, I'd be hiring a DH bike, you've got a lift up there so you might as well. I hired from Ride Outside, they were great, but there are loads of shops in town so you can take your pick.
In terms of trails, have a chat with the folk in the shop or hang around Red Rock bar and speak to people. Eceryone will have their favourites and will be able to make some suggestions.
I can organise you a guide who lives at the foot of the cable car, works as ranger and relief lifty in the bike park....he is my son.
Main bike park is direct from town, but do not forget that there are other rides and other bike parks in the area.
Most folks are riding beefy enduro ish bikes it seems. A lot of hire options in town, so if you are not taking a bike with you I would just hire.
Bike park is well connected with emergency services and passing riders stopping should you have an issues. Reciprocal health care as well....
