As an extra bit of security I fix my bike to the rack using toe clip straps.
I had to carry a fork and spade on my bike recently so strapped them to my handlebars. The clips kept coming loose which is an issue for an upcoming 2oo mile journey with my bike on the car.
What straps won't come loose.
My current ones are cheap no name ones off ebay.

I’ve got a 10 year old? Paddy hopkirk bike rack, used frequently to carry a DH bike over rough ground, never budged.
The straps still work as new.

Ps, the ‘micro loop’ Velcro that Alpkit uses is surprisingly secure if wrapped around enough times, cheap for a length as well.

You can still get Christophe ones. I have some 40 year old Binda ones still going strong. I sold a pair of NOS Binda ones on eBay last year for £40.
