[#1875634]

About to take the plunge on this. Can someone reassure me that a) I'm not going to burn the house down by melting a hole in the bottom of the tin, and b) that having a chain covered in waxy blobs afterwards in normal.

Ta

Just follow the instructions - the stuff melts easily. I use it all the time now. Its by far the best I have used

Hang the chian over the tin to drip - I normally wipe it down when its cool to remove it off the outside of the chain.

Cheers - I shall do that. I'm in search of the grail in terms of chain lube - despite using good quality stuff before every ride, I find that riding in E Lancs grinding paste means I've had chains last less time than brake pads :-/

Let us know how yo get on andy - I find it absolutly the holy grail but scienceofficer didn't. Get it fairly free of wax on the outside of the chain

I do like only lubing the chains every month or two rather than every ride

Should it just wipe off with a cloth once it's cooled?

Thats what I do - not strictly needed but I do it to reduce the amount on the outside of the chain that stains your clothes

The Holy Grail of chain lube is to use a belt 🙂

Having had a go, I assume one can reduce the number of blobs by making sure it's really hot so the excess runs off when I pull the chain out?

Belts sound good, but I'd need a new frame, they don't work with non-hub gears, and I don't know whether they'd survive Pennine mud 😛

Sounds like you didn't have it hot enough. It should be runny like water and when you hang the chain all the excess should end up back in the tin. Leave the chain in the tin for a couple of minutes as well

Yes - that's what I thought. I'll have another go with the tin hotter later.

😆 Where is this holy grail found - I don't have the time or energy for a long quest at the moment!!

Leave the chain in long enough for the metal to get hottish. That way the wax shouldn't harden too quick to leave drips. Obviously though not too hot so that most runs out of the chain before it cools and thickens.

I have to say on my Road Bike I have been VERY impressed so far with Squirt. Much easier to apply than other dry lubes I've used and does what it says. Lubes and doesn't get dirty. Well not too dirty, certainly compared to wet lubes it is VERY clean. Yet to try on the MTB as I have used all my free sample and have lots of other lubes to use before I need to buy more.

Its putoline chain wax - available from motorcycle places. its a messy faff to do but IME it lasts loads longer on the chain than any other lube - and its under £20 for a kilo tin.

Others have tried it and are not so keen but I will never go back to bicycle lubes

Thanks. When compared to a bottle of Finish Line dry lube then £20 for a kilo tin sounds like quite good VFM.

Worked much better that time, though possibly still not quite hot enough. I can live with the odd blob though.

Whoever said it has an, er, 'distinctive' smell was right; top tip would b not to do it in the kitchen but out the back on a camping stove...
