It could be just as simple as everyone who buys should put feedback on the post. That way you can search for that username and see how they have traded.
Just in case the mods or Mark et al are reading this - please don't assume that everyone who uses your forum needs to have their hands held.
From my perspective it is self policing - if someone scams you, post it as a warning. And if you choose to use PayPal gift, don't whine about it if you get scammed.
Edit - not aimed at the OP btw; your post illustrates my point...

True, but while people are happy to moan hardly anybody can be bothered to do this.
I have only ever encountered one possible odd ball who sold me a set of avid ultimates berni was his username.
Refused to admit he did not pack well and that it had caused rotors to bend and that I had paid 179 pounds years ago for the oem alloy leverd ultimates wi red bore cap ones.
Completely ignorant!
Apart from that, I have only encountered positive sells and a couple of selective purchases but never feel the love to buy from folk off here as they are either assuming/expecting quite some profit or are not being truthful.
I just call them timewasters and move on to the next muppet.
Goes much like this for years now but stwtowers never really learn to accept that buying selling is the way forward.
We want a specific section for feedback and it to be regularly monitored in the correct no noncsense manner any real person would expect as standarx imho.
Or else delete and forget classfieds on the forum.
I will then be happy to donate to forum upkeep when the classifieds has been cleaned up.
Bicyle forums owners need to get some balls and let folk swear but not directed towards anyone and sort scammers out.
Not protect and dimiss and even ban as I have been banned 3 times in the last month for someone having not agreed with myself even though I was doing exqctly what forum is here for, contributing in a helpful and constructive logical manner.
So ban me again, couldn,t give a flying cheesy puff.
i can never understand some peoples view that if you dont post on the forums you shouldnt be trusted, WHAT A LOAD OF BULL SHIT, cant see what difference that will ever make, a scammer is a scammer, it doesnt take the brain of britain to just put up a few posts, how naive some people are, the best way you can police the classifieds is by self regulation, like it is on some fishing sites, also be very carefull how you pay for your goods, its always been a bit of a lottery who you deal with and trust, but you should expect that when you buy second hand if not buy new.
Before everyone loses the their toys out the prams lets just take note that the OP was nothing more than a warning to other forum users about a dodgy seller.
People always harp on about it being a community on here, it's a member simply warning other members about a wrong un.
As far as tarring people with a brush because they don't post much in the chat forums, maybe that's because they can't be bothered with the inevitable backlash of the power user. Just saying like.
I'd not want to give lots of money to a classified only user I must say. I'd be far happier if it was a name I recognised from the forums. Yes it doesn't preclude them from being a scammer, but there's a higher likelihood they won't be able to disappear - eg there's at least 10 people on here who know me personally, I'd not want to screw anyone over.
STW Towers shouldnt act as a nanny state for the classifieds. Use a big of common sense, if a deal looks too good to be true it probably is. If you want some insurance use paypal and pay the fees, trying to save a few quid, losing the safety net it provides andthen bitching about it, really you've only got yourself to blame.
At the end of the day, you're buying from a total stranger, handing over your hard earned cash in good faith the goods will arrive. Its not CRC or Wiggle
100 post minimum before being allowed on classifieds, if you want to sell like a trader and only use this forum for that then use ebay or gumtree or admag.
Also verified by other people in profile so all can check, you build up a history then so peeps feel they are ok to deal with.
Not as simple as "ban the scammers". In any transaction the scammer could be the seller (sends out crap) or the buyer (claims to have received crap, or nothing). Who's word are you supposed to take? A ban just means a new username.
Don't be so greedy, use proper pay pal and signed/insured post. If the items are too cheap to spend that much extra then make a judgment, but I doubt deliberate scammers are that interested in the odd £5.
I ordered some stuff from the Singletrack shop. It never arrived. No one answered my emails or returned phone calls.
When I bitched about it on the forum my post was pulled and I was threatened with a ban. My replies to these mails were ignored.
Don't expect STW to do anything. Be a grown up and do it yourself.
See, if I was running STW and getting grief about people being ripped off I'd close the classified forum down, end of, problem solved. If you buy kit from here off someone you don't know and/or have never met you have to accept the risk, simple as that.
Well you certainly can't hold the website responsible.
If you looking at buying something from a name you're not familiar with, you could always look for somebody else they have sold to and pursue a reference.
I think as has been said here (and this is not a stab at the OP or anyone else for that matter before we have any tears), there needs to be some personal responsibility. Pay properly via Paypal, including paying the seller for recorded postage. And "paying" the seller for recorded means offering the extra £2 or whatever it is, not some stupid negotiation to try and get it for free.
If you are so tight that you don't put a price on not getting ripped off, then you only have yourself to blame for leaving yourself exposed.
As I say, it's not a stab at anyone, and it's not in any way condoning dodgy sellers, but if there are precautions you can take as a buyer and you choose not to take them to save £2-3 or whatever, you should be looking closer to home as to why things went wrong.
Its pretty simple IMO. If Stw can't be arsed to police missuse of the classifieds then they should delete the forum. I doubt it generates much click through revenue vs the grief they get for doing nowt about scammers.
If they intend to keep classifieds all users get a "buyer feedback" tab on their user profile where other users can give a simple '+' or '-' and a short comment. As wise as telling people to sift through a sellers posting history is its clearly not an effective solution as this is a recurring issue...

I agree with this, even if a "feedback" system is set up i'm still going to do what I do now, Only buy from regulars never from the classifieds only crew.
Or make it premier only. Then sellers details are on file.
Personally I never use ebay, and from here there's only about 3 people I'd buy stuff from worth more than say a nominal £10-15 that not worth arguing about. And paypal gift seems not to be available here in Germany (or wasn't when I tried to use it before, to someone I know personally, and was paying in arrears). Must be a UK thing?
I suppose it's nice to be able to tell advertisers that you have thousands of members thoughI doubt it generates much click through revenue vs the grief they get

Care to name them?
I'd buy off a lot more than 3, its not hard to check out sellers if they make it difficult to part with info about them walk away.
I've bought and sold stuff on here since year dot no problems, just do some research 1st instead falling over yourself to grab a bargain or save a few £'s in fees.
I bought a tyre off a classifieds only poster from Portugal and paid by pay pal gift.
Turned up in good time and quality. Must admit I didn't expect it to turn up though.
I bought "a night of heated passion" from PetePoddy.
Paid via bank transfer.
All I got was a "sweaty, mildly dissapointing spooning".
No one cared, still awaiting refund.
DrP
were you the spooner or spoonee?

Its not a law, its a rule of thumb if you want to add a layer of protection to yourself.
The classifieds is where members can shift unwanted gear and buy other people's, I think where the "only buy from regular posters in main forums" comes from is that that identifies a forum member who's in it for more than just trading.
I have had numerous great experiences buying from folk on here. Appreciate the heads up op.

Buy his digi camera from the classifieds and you'll find out.....

I have recently split my yeti and sold it on here - everyone has been a pleasure to deal with. I have been buying selling (and making the odd post on the chat forum) on here for years. Never once have i had an issue. My simple moto is to treat everyone how you would want to be treated.
Also, pay with paypal and dont use gift. Simple steps.
zI once had a wonderful meal.. edit wrong thread - sorry 🙂
