I have used strips which do help but found conti tyres with puncture protection very good as well

The slime tubes are rubbish imo. First they weight a ton, my mate used them and anything bigger than a small puncture would not be sealed. He had to walk back from Pentlands to Fountainpark as he did not have a tube with him and the Slime tube would not seal.

As for tyres depends what tyres You're looking for. I'm running Specialized Nimbus Armadillo 1.5's on my hack bike. No punctures to report as of yet and I used them for the last couple of months. My mate has the same Nimbus armadillo, again zero punctures to report of in the last year. They do weight more then normal slicks but as long as I don't have to fix a puncture I can live with it. Rubber is also quite hard so they are not the best for traction in wet corners however for normal riding/commuting I find them excellent.

I want to keep the Panaracer Uff Da's on my Surly, they are great for commuting but pants on trails.

y mate uses the slime stips (not the tubes) and he reckons he hasn't had a puncture in ages.

I used some kevlar strips from some wll known brand whose name I forget, but I thought they increased the rolling resistance. they did turn a big thorn into a slow puncture though.

the conti protection tyres are just protection on the tyre walls aren't they - but they have blacki chilli rubber which may be more resistant.

Schalbe do kevlar tyres, like smart sam - but I don't know how good they are.

turner guy - no - they have a full kevlar belt and are guaranteed puncture proof. ( get a puncture in the first year tyre and inner tube are replaced free of charge.) Used them for a few years - you do get occasional punctures from slivers of glass but weekly I pick bits of glass and thorns out of the tyres that have not caused punctures

you are right tj - I was thinking of the mtb range - like mtn king protection.

For road use I have the specialized armadillo and they are pretty bullet proof - had one puncture from a sizable nail and another went through the rim disintegrating after a white van misjudged his stopping distance and 'tapped' my back wheel at a junction.
