Having a couple of issues with my new pugsley build i could do with some advice on if someone would be so kind.  Trying to avoid anymore costly 'experimental' mistakes.

Marge lites - just got them built up with an alfine 8 on back, the lbs said there was a bit of a flat spot near the weld on the rim but shouldnt be too noticible with large tyres.  Unfortunately, there is a constant bobbing from the rear end especially when coasting at speed, i can also see the tyre dip when rotating in line with the weld.  Can i do something about this? i ordered them from the US (as wanted them in anno bronze) so cant really send them back.

Alfine 8 - have a raceface affect crank with a 30t chainring and a 20t shimano sprocket on the alfine.  worked spot on at first but read that for the chainline to be right i would need to reverse the sprocket so that it dished outwards (with the pastic guard on the inside towards the hub).  the afline cable arm now catches on the chain and the gears werent as smooth.  Im assuming i just change the sprocket back round and see how she goes?

Also considering whether to build up some rabbit holes in the new year to give me a krampug option and sell my HT to fund them, given that i dont get to the trails much i thought this might cover those duties as well as being more bikepack friendly for less gnar longer distance rides.  Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks in advance

For the Krampug bit, try and track down Coastkid. Not sure if is around here much but he still has a good blog. He knows his Krampug stuff.

Pugs are great in my totay biased opinion 😉

Are you 100% sure it's the rim and not the Tyre not quite seated? My on one fatty was a proper bastard for that. Had to pump tthe tyres up really hard to get them straight, and then let all that hard fought air out again....

Surly themselves don't seem to bother speccing rabbit holes anymore so I'd look for a WTB scraper or the Alex rims they use now instead for the plus experiment.

A flat spot on a normal rim can sometimes be tuned out. If the flat spot is at 6 o clock, tighten the spokes at 9,12 and 3 o clock while also loosening the spokes at 6 o clock.

this may have little effect on a fat bike rim, which i guess is a lot stiffer though.

it may also be possible to manipulate the flat spot out loosening the spokes at the flat spot and leaning full body weight at 90 degrees, ie put the flat in the 3 or 9 o clock position and put your full weight on the rim.

if you think the rim is unusable, then you have nothing to lose eh.

I've been running some Velocity Blunt 35mm rims on my 29+ for over 4 years - ideal for summer use - I have 65mm and 90mm fat bike wheels too.

Is the tyre bobbing or actually the rim... I ask as some tyres are not actually round when mounted... people have had interesting experiences with VeeTire products.... had some that were a bit oval and wandered side to side when properly mounted.

Check the rim run out on a wheel building jig or cable ties on the seat stays....

I'd check the roundness of the rim as @rickmeister says. A mm or so won't be noticeable but more than that probably will. Has the tyre been sat around for some time before being put on the rim? I've had tyres that I've kept upright, or nearly so, and when I've put them on to a wheel there's a real wobble as the part of the tyre that was touching the ground has developed a flat spot. Swap tyres between front and back, if the wobble stays at the back then it's the rim, if it moves to the front it's the tyre.

If the LBS were building up the wheel then surely they'd have sorted the "flat spot" out?

Edit: Having the direct mount chainring dished to the outside is recommended for fat bikes to give clearance between the chain and the tyre. If you've plenty of clearance with the chainring dished inwards then go with that if it all works. At least with the Alfine you can check the chainline easily.

Thanks for all the advice

I just picked up the back of the bike and span the wheel a bit but couldnt see any obvious flat spot there, tomorrow ill will put the bike on the stand again and check the rim properly then pump some more air in to see if it re-seats the tyre.  the tyres were already mounted on the wheels that came with the pugsley as it was a used complete bike bought off ebay so just refitted them to the new rims, plan to go tubeless using clown shoe rim tape but i bought the 65mm instead of the 75mm by accident so will sort that once im confident everything else is spot on.  Good tip with cable ties on the seat stays to check the rim run, will give it a go if i cant sort it.

To be fair to the LBS he seemed pretty switched on and did say to pop back in if there are any issues with the wheels but thought id try and make sure its nothing simple first.

This forum really is a fantastic source for advice and knowledge, very much appreciated

Have had the 'wobble' on my Pugsley - twas the tyre bead not seated properly within the rim. Pumping up a bit harder helped it pop in place.

I route my Alfine cable under the chainstay and it works fine. I removed the plastic guard from my sprocket and have it dished outwards.

Well, as it happened the tyre was also flat this morning so i took the tyre off and checked the wheel, spinning it whilst in the stand and using the cable tie across the seat stay method noticed the rim dipped about 1mm at the weld. New tube, tyre re-fitted and still bobbing around all over the shop. Conceded defeat and dropped the bike off at the lbs to investigate, no global fat bike day for me☹️.

Did change the Alfine sprocket back round though and seemed much tidier. Will check chain line when I pick her back up.
