Looking for combined STW wisdom/contacts!
I am a local councillor in Rothwell, Leeds.
As part of encouraging active travel I am hoping to fund some public cycle lockers/secure parking at a few points in the area. With the cycle nouse on here I am sure someone can point out the best models/suppliers to shortlist.
Few asks:
1. The mighty Ton lives in my shire, so lockers will need to fit bikes the size of a farm gate.
2. With rise in e-bikes would want to fit in a decent size hybrid bike.
3. Location gets a few folk travelling through it, so wanting lockers that can be either locked using riders own lock OR use an app/pin code or something.
Thanks for any help folk can give.
CHB I am in Leeds (not your part!) and can I just say I 1000% support what you are doing - thank you. I hate that I don't feel safe leaving my bikes places; except the reinforced units at the Uni (we have a card to get in and out of those). Don't have answers - just thanks
In my day job I work in procurement, so would like to find a quality value supplier that can offer kit to other wards after Rothwell.
Most of the budgets for this kind of stuff are Councillor discretion budgets, so if you want the kit then nudge your councillor. Maybe give it a few weeks till I get something sorted for Rothwell and can share details with you and your councillors (I talk to all flavours of party!).
I used to regularly specify Bikeaway vertical lockers but not for a while now so not sure if the latest crop of LLS enduro sleds / enduro e-sleds will fit. But having said that, most commuters are on sensible shorter wheelbase bikes.
Did you find a suitable locker? I am working on a bit of a project where I think these would be useful.
You need to speak to Bristol City council who had a project to turn parking on residential roads into communal covered lockers. Communities who agreed that a space outside one of tbe houses could be used got one for free. Massive roller topped things for about 8 bikes. Popular with users. Less so with residents who complained about loss of space to park their 3 cars.
Interesting. Also a Cllr in Lewes looking at similar and thinking of how secure lockers might combine with Bike Parklets which I've got funding for. Brighton are putting in a number of the secure hangar types.
How secure are these things? the ones I have seen ( but I didn't look closely) looked like pretty basic locks and nothing easy to use a proper lock inside them
Have I missed something? I use a really good lock and lock to lampposts and the like - seems at least as secure to me but thats only if I am out. At home all bikes go inside
Have I missed something?
You might have.
The Bristol project was/is as much about reclaiming space from cars as it is about enabling people in small terraced houses with no rear access to use bikes, and hopefully get rid of their cars.
The reality I suspect is that no-one has got rid of a car, and many of the bikes are just left in there unused.
Better provision of lockers out and about in towns has to be a good thing doesn't it?
Transport consultant here! I’ve pulled together a load of different options for various projects and have seen some interesting options at Eurobike this year. There are bike hangers, lockers and also some pretty cool secure 2 car parking space constructions which house bike carousels where you can’t see the bikes and can be programmed to use key / rfid / app to dispense the correct bike. Please don’t get vertical lockers - no good for inclusive access.
