[Closed] PSAs that may or may not be amazing enough to warrant their own thread

So this is interesting.

Since we stickied this thread our revenue from affiliate sales has dropped by almost half. The reason as far as we can ascertain is because there are no longer forum topics being posted that include the name of the item/deal/offer and so fewer people are clicking.

So, I'd like to run an experiment and ask everyone to post a fresh topic for each PSA that you come across. As before if you spot a great offer you want to share with everyone start your post with 'PSA: '

I'll temporarily close this topic for a few weeks so we can see if there's any difference. If it's all purely coincidental that the number of outgoing affiliated clicks from the forum seems to correlate with the time this thread was stickied then I'll open it up again.

Cheers All.

Mark

@mark How about giving PSAs there own tab.. Overview/Chat/Bike/PSAs etc? Keep them all in one spot and save having to go searching for them. Just a thought as a alternative to this thread.

Just my opinion, but they wouldn't get seen/ used as much. I only look in this thread when my life is really really dull, but I look on the forum much more often. In the unlikely event something named catches my eye then I open the thread.

TBH actually I think mark's hypothesis about why a single thread doesn't work as well would apply almost as much as a dedicated forum.  Fair enough with a whole forum you could quickly scan down it, but loads of people wouldn't even open it.

Glad this thread is open again.

@Mark I get a reason for driving traffic through links. cool. Have you done an analysis on other correlations for decreased referels. eg tail off once WiggleCRC closed as I guess that was creating quite a lot of frenzy/ attention. End of the Ribble stock clearances. Have you asked your users why it may be?

I was also surprised this thread was closed by @Mark without any consultation. Seems to me a bit like a repeat of the same abrupt closure of the old classifieds which lead to the new classifieds being dead for years which surely must of affected site traffic? Cue the Scotroutes joke abut Tractor production being up year on year, every year.... its just feedback...

In terms of posting PSAs, my hypothesis is that this thread would cause more to be posted. Something needs to be really good for me to create a new thread and clutter up the forum.

But in terms of people looking, clicking through, I can see why it could cause a drop.

As OP, I say with revenue halved, do whatever gets it back!

And I'll excuse myself by saying again my intent was literally what it says in the thread title, not to create one thread for all PSAs, which what people started using it as, which probably influenced it getting stickied.

My impulse spending has certainly dropped off since the thread went to a sticky at the top of the page.

Much preferred it when it was a single thread with the PSA in the title. If I was interested then I could click and hopefully there would be a link to click on.

Might be worth while removing the PSA if there isn't a link attached

Yep, totally agree. My prev. comments were meant to be supportive.

Were there really that many PSA threads before this? Chiggle demise notwithstanding, it seems to me like much more gets posted on this thread now than did on individual PSA threads before... stuff that doesn't "warrant it's own thread", funnily enough.

Obviously Mark has access to the numbers, which don't lie, but I find it strange that this thread has actually led to less people buying stuff they don't need... I'm sure it hasn't for me, I struggle to scroll past it if I see it's been updated.

Total speculation here, but since the chiggle fire sale I have spent precisely zero on bike stuff, or camping gear or wetsuits for that matter!

how widely would that be replicated (with millions of pounds in stock being dumped recently ) to see some consumer fatigue?

+1 for this - the benefits of each having their own thread (and still appear in the Overview for general visibility) plus you can easily see all of the PSAs in one place rather than having to go searching for them.

The end of that Chiggle sale might have more to do with the reduction in affiliate sales

I check this thread all the time, and agree that people post more offers as a result of it, stuff that wpuldnt warrant a separate thread.

Yeah wasn't this thread pinned after wiggle was finished? I was buying crap left and right through links on here and haven't bought anything since tbh.

I'm happy enough if STW want to do it differently for business reasons, that's a good reason and supporting st towers supports all of us.But from a user point of view that sounds like a crap change, this thread has been fantastic.

Mr buying has slowed noticeably since the Chiggle fire sale - this thread is great - I prefer all PSAs in one place

Personally, I looked at this thread a couple of times, but then I haven't for months.

Possibly because it was a sticky. I just rarely look at stickies after the first time

Instead of wading through it all in one massive thread, I personally prefer a thread for each PSA.

I think this thread still has a place for possible PSAs, they're not all worthy of a separate thread IMO.

I also think that bargains have seriously reduced since Chiggle went under

Cheapest I've seen 10-51 slx cassettes since Merlin were punting them out for £57.50 over winter.

@mark

I wonder if the problem was not the fact that it was a single thread, but more the fact that it was stickied. I'm afraid I never look at the top block of stuff in yellow - I'm 100% blind to it. For me the forum starts the row below. If its at the top of page one it's there on merit - i.e. people are posting and it's current. The top bit is for t&c, rules and updates no one reads or posts on so needs stickying otherwise it'd disappear for ever. As a PSA thread, if it's bouncing around near the top of the first page people must be posting and FOMO takes over and you take a peak. If it's stickied - never look - never bother to see when it was last updated.,

I can't be the only one that thinks like this.

I also closed my wallet... for a while.

But it was actually this thread that got me spending regularly again.

I feel the problem for STW is probably caused by a bit of each of the factors identified by people here.

If there's a simple UX solution though, that's great.

complete opposite for me.  Checked the stickied thread at the top every time I came to the forum (easy to see when it was last updated) and bought more stuff as a result.  Whereas I missed a lot of bargain PSA threads when they were away from the top.

As someone else has mentioned, I suspect the drop in commissions is probably linked to the reduction in the number of deals.  Along with Chiggle there were a number of other shops/disties dumping stock (either overstock from Covid, drop off in sales, or going under).  Most of the PSA stuff that I've bought recently hasn't been bike related because there were so many deals previously I don't need anything (must be hitting full price sales in the industry generally.). I've got a load of newish clothing, tyres, spares etc.

Laithewaites have got 30% off everything with free delivery until the end of the month (code 30OFF) which is stackable with the 20% off for subscriptions (easily cancellable). Only applicable to new accounts but a different email address will suffice. Cashback via Quidco and / or your bank should work too.

I can recommend the Black Stump and Cabalié for reds - chin chin!?

This was definitely the case for me. I hardly noticed the thread after it was stickied having previously bought a load of tents etc.

[MOD] Closing the thread to test as per Marks post on the last page. Please continue to post PSAs in their own threads

Resticking this as a test again. Maybe we are all not spending?

But please feel free to post separate PSA threads if you want. This is not an exclusive repository for PSA topics.

How exactly it this better than individual PSAs, you know individual ones are worth clicking on by the title, constantly checking this and going to the last page is an irritating waste of time for the most part. This is the last time I'm checking.

I quite fancy one of those ydun tents, but does anyone know how waterproof they are?

I can’t find any mention of them even being waterproof

I only really plan on going camping during nice weather, but I do live in England
