I have two pairs, if you don't mind the branding, they are fantastic fit with a top quality pad. As good as shorts I have costing 4 times the price.

Judging by the sizing guide, I need to buy x-small ones, but I'm normally a Large if not x-large.

Any real-world sizing guidance?

large spot on for me. 32/33" waist 6ft and fairly skinny. If I was chunkier I'd want to size up.

When on earth has 29" waist been a Large or XL??!

33" waist here and large are perfect.

good shorts for the the money, the sizing is pretty much spot on real world.

6'1" 33" waits XL perfect.
I normally take a Large Pearl izumi bib if that helps...
