What a terrible thing to happen to someone out enjoying their hobby.
Without wanting to make assumptions, I'll second the above comments about carbon monoxide.
A lot of us use our vehicles for improvised camping & cooking facilities.
Lack of ventilation in a non-purpose built vehicle is a very real risk.

Slightly OT but its not something that you think about yet its something that is a definite danger. A few weeks ago we had a camp stove in the outer part of the tent to keep us warm. Maybe a reminder/PSA wouldn't go amiss or a mag article on the subject???

What a waste of a young man's life.

Someone I knew at Uni also passed away in their sleep due to CM poisoning.

Tis not good.

RIP

Lets not get ahead of ourselves, it could be other causes, but it does sound likely. Got a detector in my campervan (and room sealed heating)

Heard of a family that had a near miss after moving a disposable bbq into their caravan awning so the embers would keep them warm. Luckily someone phoned them and dialled 999 after realising they weren't really with it.

Very sad.

Echo not jumping to conclusions. It could well have been down to something else (rare heart condition, for example).

I didn't really want to post personal details but to end the speculation, it wasn't CM poisoning, he had an underlying heart condition.

RIP. 🙁

Also very sad to hear this. Difficult to accept that someone young and healthy can just drop down dead 🙁

Still worth saying though - it can be dangerous sleeping in unventilated vans. Year before last, I remember a club-level motorsports guy last year had put a spent disposable bbq in his van before turning in - thankfully he was woken up by someone else in the paddock and found unconscious but alive. The bbq was still barely smouldering but enough to cause dangerous levels of CO. A motorcycle racer died of the same a few months later. Anyone who kips in a van for rides or races, remember to keep anything that burns outside unless it is completely, 100% extinguished.

As a few people have mentioned above, I'm not normally one to comment on articles "for the sake of it" but this is so sad and has really struck a chord with me.

I guess it is because I'm a similar age to Alex, recently got married myself and also share a love of riding bikes. The thought of leaving all that behind is hard to imagine. RIP.

In which case, he won't have suffered. Which may be small consolation for those who have lost him.

Very, very sad.
