Well the update has arrived for all those using the Edge 810, some of the tedious bugs have been "fixed" Hmmm... well some have some haven't.
This only works on the 810, if you have other Edge units then I suggest it's in a similar location/method/menu and sorry but you'll have to locate that yourselves, this is from MY 810..
One thing that has changed in the update is the TBT (turn by turn) direction aid has been turned off.. So if you've updated the software to v3.40 the TBT needs turning back on (if you want it on of course) ... And it's moved location..
Here's the navigation to find it..
A) Main Home screen
B) Choose the Folder in the bottom Left of the Home screen
C) Select Courses (You'll need a course loaded I think, I'd suggest loading one if you don't have one in there, I do so I'm following my setup)
D) When in the Courses Folder select the Three (3) bars menu in the bottom Right of the screen
E) You get the "Course Options" menu
F) Select "Turn Guidance" and slide the Bar to the Right..This turns On the TBT direction facility.
G) back out of the screens back to the home page.
Once this is set it is set for all Courses that you load so you've no need to remember the location once it's been set, nor have to do it for every course you load.
I found the the TBT had been turned off, via the update, as I'd followed a course and the TBT wasn't showing/coming up on the screen when I knew I'd need to turn off.. HeyHo.
HTH
Do I have to connect the Garmin upto the computer to update it, or can I do it over Bluetooth and use my phone?
You have to go into the Unit to activate it..

Be careful. 3.40 has been released for the 510 also, and the Garmin forums have many posts about issues after updating. Including lost ride data and that is critical for me. I was having big problems prior to 3.20 with losing ride data. If I can't rely on it to record the ride the thing is useless to me. I was about to return it before they did an update to fix it, but they might have broken it again.
Garmin's reputation for software quality is poor. Dodgy firmware, issues with their plugin and Express, Connect web site is broken half the time.
Just upgraded. Hopefully not a backwards step as so far my 810 has been pretty reliable. Though don't use much of the newer features.
Shame about the garmin software really, perticularly the online stuff, as the hardware is great.
Well IME I've had very few issues with mine and only teeny annoyances with Connect.
Occasional lost ride data, well couldn't be bothered fixing the broken file so not really an issue. Then Connect has been a pain, certainly if you use the "modern" version, keep it in the old version and it's been fault free.
I too frequent the forums and have seen many a bun fight regarding both the Unit and Connect, however most post relate to the same things.. Loss of files/corrupt files and Connect being a bit pants and then Express being a bit rubbish TBH. You can skim through all the angst on the forum and possibly cut out 40% of the posts which relate to these issues and only read one or two that contain all the answers... ๐
But I've been very happy with my unit, it's been a godsend and I'd not be without it now. ๐
I've no experiance with previous versions of the unit and only played around a few times with a mates 1000.
I hardly ever bother with Connect, only for the occasional software upgrade. I just copy the files directly off the device as if it were an USB drive then load them into training peaks (or Strava if i want to share.) Maybe if connect was better I might use it more.
Only a couple of times has the 810 thrown a wobbly on me and had me cursing it. It's lost all my config but never any ride data.
Main reason I use Connect is because I've got it set to sync with Strava, Endomondo and MapMyRides. Yeah, I'm a sports tracking whore ๐ . Well, it's just I have friends that use different ones and we want to compare rides etc.
Also Connect in theory syncs Courses to the Garmin, but I've not got it to work properly. I've been using Garmin Basecamp instead to push Courses to the device. Yet to use it to follow a route, but want to give it a go.
