Fanks dude ๐
cheers for the heads up!
so will the elevation thing be sorted now? my current readings from rides on the websites (bikehike, gpsies etc etc) are some 500ft less than the reading of the edge 800 ๐ )
How do I get the update on my 800? Does it autodownload next time I use garminconnect or do I need to do something about it?
Thanks!
Oscillate Wildly - do you mean elevation gain? I think there'll always be a discrepancy between the GPS and mapping software - the mapping software will take the GPS course and map it directly onto topo maps, measuring every change in elevation along it (including any corners cut & any small changes); the GPS uses barometric info as well as the GPS so will probably iron out some of the more subtle changes in altitude.
That's my understandingt anyway as all the GPS units I've owned have given significantly lower elevation change readings compared with memorymap etc.
Calibrating the unit with a point of know elevation will help to some degree though I think.
DT78 - the easiest way is to download the "Webupdater" software from the Garmin site then just connect the Edge and run the software

Download Webupdater to you PC, plug in your unit to pc USB, run Webupdater and follow instructions.
Edit: damn too late ๐

yeah sorry elevation gain -
i used to have a dakota20 and that was only ever about 5ft out in elevation gain from that of the websites....
i dont understand how it works on this now? if i start at 0ft elevation gain, and ride the route and get to 2330 ft, its physically reading the gain as i do it...
doing it on the websites (and of course my dakota20) and its about 1850ft so somehow ive gained 500 feet of elevation on that ride??
one of them is wrong - its surely to coincental that dakota 20 and ALL of the websites states the 1850ft gain?
its just when i keep a check on the edge 800 as its gaining height (i have this on the screen) i never ever notice it jump from say 100ft to 300ft instantly in error, it seems to go up steady and as and when im climbing?
is it not automatic the altimeter?
i have never set anything up like that on my edge800? perhaps thats why then?
That does sound a bit odd - I've never had mine over estimate altitude gain! I can't explain that one I'm afraid.
As for the calibration, you're right, it does automatically do this using GPS data. I think it does help with accuracy if you manually enter a point of known altitude as it calibrates the baromatric altimeter and helps varify the GPS altitude (which I believe isn't as accurate as in other dimensions...but I could be wrong!)
it is very strange - and also to confirm its wrong i just remembered ...
when i upload to garmin connect the route ive just done, there is an option/button for 'correct elevation gain' or something similar...
on this too, it then loses about 500ft of elevation gain somewhere, and thats from a garmin based product ๐
very strange, the dakota definitely never used to do it, as id often plot the routes beforehand, thus already knowing what the elevation gain was going to be, and low and behold it was always there or there abouts....certainly not 500ft out ๐
still love the device though, its a mint bit of kit!
Ok thanks for the info will have a go this evening.
Thanks for the heads up on this. Finally they have given us 1 sec recording instead of the smart recording. Hopefully get back some off-road accuracy...
