Of course, it's just a case of whether you can get a low enough ring for your needs.
And find a 96BCD ring with whatever weird offset Shimano decided to use that year.

These cranks don't have an offset BCD, unlike the XTM8000 etc.
I'm going for this chainring:
Deore double is 39.99 and that uses 104bcd (easier to find chainrings), and since it's a double will work well with boost wheels, or with non-boost if you space the chainring inboard a bit with some spacers.
Just need to find a cheap triple front mech now and I'm sorted. Cheers.
