Evening all...

My girlfriend is looking to replace her fathers 15 year old Argos special mountain bike with a newer item (which is 'proper'), and I am tasked with compiling the shortlist!

She's looking to spend under four hundred quid - and I know that's a big ask - but can you guys recommend any decent bikes for this price range? I'm after basic bikes with sturdy components, nothing flash, just purely functional. Most likely rigid with spec money spent on better components rather than a not-worth-having suspension fork or draggy mechanical discs.

Cheers! T

All can be peeped at in the shops. If she did want rigids, the Boardman hybrids looks like top value. None of the forks are that atrocious though.

Halfords have quite a few Carrera bikes reduced to under £400.

Will have suspension forks and sometimes cable discs but I wouldn't worry too much about them.

If he doesnt need a mountain bike the boardman comp hybrid is very nice with BB7 cable discs and a rigid fork. Might have an extra 10% off which could bring it in budget( currently reduced to £450)

edit: lloks like Toasty had pretty much the same ideas. The Boardman is nice bike for gentle bridleways, cycle paths etc.

For that budget, I'd either be thinking of a 2nd hand hardtail or maybe Islabike Beinn 29. My mate bought one last year and its not that bad, and can easily be built up if required at a later date.
Personally, I wouldn't be thinking of front suspension for that budget.
